Unable to send email

Suddenly, today, I am unable to send any email. I am receiving email.

When I start to reply I get the "Original message cannot be shown right now' error.

When I enter a reply I get the "message can't be saved right now" error.

When I hit send I get the "there is a problem sending this message" error and tells me to save a draft.

When I try to save a draft I get the "this message could not be saved right now" error.

None of the errors explain what the problem is to let me correct it.

I need my email working. What is the problem?!?!

Edit: This is only happening in Windows. I can send via my android.

Jody

Hello Jody,

Good day!

I understand how frustrating it must be to encounter these email issues, especially when you rely on your email for communication. Let's work together to identify the problem and find a solution.

From what you've described, it seems that you are experiencing several error messages while trying to send emails through your Windows application. The messages indicate that the original message cannot be shown, drafts cannot be saved, and emails cannot be sent. Since you mentioned that sending emails works on your Android device, this suggests that the issue may be specific to the Windows application or its settings.

Since you mentioned that this is only affecting Outlook on Windows (while it works on Android), it’s likely related to how your Outlook for Windows is connecting to the server, or potentially a local issue on the device itself. Let me walk through a few questions to help pinpoint the problem further:

  1. Recent Updates or Changes: Have you recently updated your Outlook version, installed any new software, or changed your internet connection? Occasionally, updates or changes to settings can interrupt connectivity to the email server.

  2. Storage and Network Connectivity: Sometimes, a lack of storage space or a slow network connection can cause Outlook to struggle with saving drafts or sending messages. Do you notice any issues with other applications, or is your internet connection stable?

  3. Account Settings: If you're on a corporate network, are there any account or security policies that may have been updated by your IT department? Security policies can sometimes cause unexpected issues.

  4. Offline Mode: Could you confirm if your Outlook is set to "Work Offline"? This setting is easy to check and can sometimes be overlooked, but it stops email from syncing and sending.

Kindly follow this guide which may help resolve this issue:

Check if Outlook is connected

If you see messages like “Disconnected,” “Working Offline,” or “Trying to connect…Outlook can’t reach the email server to send your mail,” then your Outlook is not connected to an email server. So, try to bring Outlook to Online mode. To do so in Outlook, follow the steps given below:

  1. Go to Send/Receive>>Preferences>>Work Offline

  2. Turn Work Offline to Work Online.

3. Open the message and resend it or choose to send/receive.

4. Check if the issue is fixed.

Recall if you have changed your password recently

Try to recall if you have changed the password of your Outlook profile; if you have changed, then try to use your new password and if you have and if you have forgotten it, then try to change your password.

  1. Go to File>Account Settings>>Account Settings.

  2. Select your email account on the email tab, and select change.

  1. Enter a new password.

  2. Select Next>>Close>>Finish.

See if your antivirus program has scanned your email message as a virus

Maybe your antivirus software is preventing you from sending or receiving emails while scanning emails. If an antivirus program has found a virus, then it needs to be removed first so that Outlook can start sending/receiving emails.

You should scan for viruses and resolve it. After resolving the virus, you can turn off the antivirus protection to make sending/receiving of emails work.

Repair your Outlook program

Sometimes you may need to repair Outlook program. This is an easy but time-consuming process. To repair the Outlook program, follow the steps given below:

  1. Go to Start>>Apps and Features.

  2. Select the Microsoft Office product you need to repair.

  3. Select advance features after clicking on it.

  4. Scroll down and click on Repair.

Complete the process of repair by following the instructions displayed on the screen

Repair your Outlook profile

Issues in your Outlook profile will prevent you from connecting to your email through Outlook. So, to overcome this issue, try to repair your Outlook profile.

  1. In Outlook, go to File>>Account Settings>>Account Settings.

  2. Choose your account (profile) on the Email tab.

  3. Choose Repair.

  4. Follow the instructions to repair.

Restart Outlook once the repair is done.

Try to start Outlook in Safe mode

Any of the Outlook add-ins may be responsible for the prevention of your email messages from sending. In order to disable all add-ins, try to start Outlook in safe mode. Then try to create a new Outlook email profile which will allow you to resend the email. Follow the steps given below to start Outlook in safe mode:

  1. Click Windows key+R together to open the Run box.

  2. Type Outlook.exe /safe

  3. Press Open or Ok in the Run box.

  4. Now, open Outlook try to resend the mail.

  • If the previous steps don’t work, you can use the Inbox Repair Tool to fix PST files.

  • First, close Outlook completely.

  • Go to ‘C:\Program Files’ or ‘C:\Program Files (x86)‘ and search for scanpst.exe.

  • Alternatively, you can use this command based on your Outlook version: ‘C:\Program Files (x86) or (x64)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16‘ to open scanpst.exe.

  • Open ‘SCANPST.exe‘ and browse to find your PST file in Documents\Outlook Files.

  • Click Start to scan your PST file. If errors are still found, click Repair to fix them.

  • Finally, start Outlook again and check if your emails are now sent from the Outbox.
