unable to edit my signature in Outlook 2013

Hello All, I have searched for the answer to this and tried the various solutions provided but am still experiencing an issue with the signature button and Stationery and fonts button not responding.  To help with this the OS is Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and MS Office 2013 (trial Version), although I was having the same issue in Outlook 2010.

Things I have attempted
Create new profile
Start in Safe mode
edited the registry

All to no avail however, I have just attempted to send an email but now there is no signature at all.  Help!

Hi Peter,

I understand how it feels when you are unable to edit or use the signature in Outlook. Let me help you with the issue.

I would need some more information before we proceed with the troubleshooting:

What is the type of email account configured on Outlook (POP3/IMAP/Exchange Active Sync or Exchange Server)?

Are the options grayed out or just not responding?

Does the signature contain any image?

Are you able to create new signatures with the same content?

What changes were made to the registry editor?

Provide more details to assist you better.

Meanwhile, you may delete the signature file from the following location:

Note: Ensure to back up all the files from the folder before deleting them.

C:\Users\<User name>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Signatures

Also you may delete the following registry key and check if the issue occurs:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\MailSettings

Disclaimer: Important this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, follow these steps to back up the registry:

Hello Arvinda,

Thanks for your reply, in response to your questions

We use a hosted Exchange Server

The buttons are not greyed out, there is no response

I have a signature at the moment which needs editing and it does contain an image, this is a .png

We are not able to create nor edit signatures

These are the changes made to the registry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{0006F03A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\LocalServer32

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{0006F03A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\LocalServer32

Both these values have been changed to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\Outlook.exe

Strangely enough I am unable to find the registry key you have mentioned so am not able to delete it.

Regards,

Peter

You don't need to delete that other reg key - it controls the defaults for email, not signatures.

Did you restart Outlook after changing those two keys? Does the Signature & Fonts button work? You may also need to empty your temp folder.

If you just need to edit the signature, you can use a text editor to edit the HTML, word to edit the RTF, and can edit the image directly. Type of paste %appdata%\Microsoft\signatures in the address bar of windows explorer and press Enter. If you use a different png, change the dimensions in the HTML file too.

If signatures aren't added to your messages automatically, it's a different problem.

Hello Diane,

I haven't been able to delete the other key as it wasn't in the registry.

I have followed your advice from the web and still the edit signature and Signature and font buttons do not respond, even though they are not greyed out.  I have emptied the temp folder too.

I have just attempted to edit the signatures using the method described and restarted outlook but this doesn't seem to work either.  By restart I am guessing you mean close the programme and then strat it again?  Hopefully I can get this resolved soon as it is driving me mad.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help,

Peter

Yeah, restart = close and reopen.

Is anything else acting weird? Do the other buttons in Options work?

Does it work in Safe mode?

To open Outlook in Safe mode: Close Outlook then hold Ctrl as you click on the Outlook icon. You'll get a message asking if you want to start in Safe mode. Click Ok.

Funny you should mention that as I cant edit contacts either.

I tried in safe mode too but its not playing ball.  Also it doesnt want to open in safe mode!  It just opens normally when I hold down Ctrl.

I have just manged to open Outlook in safe mode and am not able to edit my signature.  However I can actually edit my contacts now.

Good day - I wanted to chime in here as I too am unable to resolve the issue of the signature and stationary buttons not working.  I have spent a considerable amount of time online troubleshooting and the resolutions that have succeeded for others have not for me.

I am running Win7 x64 and Office 2013 Pro x64. The Office install was preceded by uninstalling Office 2010 x86 from my machine. Office itself appears to be working great, with the notable exception that I cannot access the signature dialog to set a default. The signatures from Office 2010 are available in the drop down, but I cannot edit them or set them to automatically be included in emails. I am using Outlook with Exchange. On a separate machine, I have done a similar upgrade from Office 2010 to 2013 and the signature dialog works without issue.

So far, I have done the following to try to resolve the issue, all without any impact.
  • Launch Outlook in safe mode
  • Delete the PST file
  • Create a new Outlook profile
  • Modify the registry to point to the Outlook.exe (mentioned as a successful resolution on several boards).
  • Repair the Office installation
  • Delete the signature folder
  • Clear IE Cache
One thing that I noticed that I have not seen anywhere online is that when I got to Options-->Mail-->Signatures, I get a record in my Windows Application Event Log.

Source: Outlook
Event ID: 27
Description: The operation failed.

I am hoping that someone out there has encountered this before and can help Peter and myself out.

Thanks!
