turning off copilot on outlook

I want to turn off copilot in my outlook email desktop client (via microsoft 365). I keep seeing advice to do it via the file tab at the top of the outlook page, but there is no such tab on my interface (screenshot attached). How do I disable the copilot feature? Please provide as simple a means of doing this as possible, with clear, step by step instructions!

Thanks!

Dear Erica Wagner,

Thank you for using Microsoft products and posting in the Microsoft Support Community.

I realise you want to turn off copilot on outlook, please point out if I'm misunderstanding.

What you mentioned about turning it off via the File tab at the top of the outlook page is limited to classic Outlook. from the screenshot you provided, it looks like you are using new Outlook. for the interface of classic Outlook, please refer to the image below:

You can open classic Outlook and follow the steps in the official article to turn off copilot.

How to turn off Copilot in Microsoft 365 Family and Personal subscriptions - Microsoft Support

Image

Allow me to explain to you that Microsoft has recently been experimenting with new Microsoft 365 subscriptions, including the AI tool Copilot, to meet the needs of different users. As a result, users in certain regions may notice some changes in Microsoft 365 and the addition of Copilot to Microsoft 365 plans. I fully understand the inconvenience this may cause, especially for some users who do not wish to use this AI feature.

If you still want to use new Outlook and turn off copilot, you can contact Chat Support directly to modify your Microsoft 365 Classic subscription that does not include Copilot.

  1. Visit this website: Contact - Microsoft Support

  2. Type in your problems in the search box there.( For instance, contact support.)

  3. Now click Get help, and Select Contact Support below.

  1. Go to the Products and services tab, and choose either Microsoft 365 and Office category

  2. On the Category tab, choose  Manage My Subscription .

  3. Go to Confirm.

  4. Choose to chat with a support representative or request a callback.

Tips: If after completing the steps above, the page is not available, it may be a non-working day or non-working time, and it is recommended that you contact them during the  page prompted working hours.

Thank you for your patience and support.

Best Regards

Please explain how to "open classic outlook." I don't see any option to do this within the new outlook OR in my start menu. I am not interested in editing my registry or doing anything potentially damaging to my computer to do this, and waiting for a reply on windows support chat is not something I want to deal with either.

Surely there is a simple way to turn off copilot in outlook! If there isn't, I will have to find another email system because this is ridiculous. No program should ever attempt to change my words and voice!

I got classic outlook installed on my computer, but the option to turn copilot off isn't turning up in its file tab either. The instructions I am finding are really confusing and complicated for something that should be REALLY straightforward! There should be a button that allows me to toggle this ridiculous feature off. Why wouldn't there be?

We must be intercommunicating or something because it wouldn't be as complicated and require me to wait around on a callback or on chat that isn't even available today in order to turn off a distracting new feature I don't want to use.

Having to go through all these hoops just to turn something off is really insulting!! It's no wonder many, including myself, defect to Linux. Why can't there be a simple button on the toolbar in Outlook for Web or the actual Mail app itself for disabling this???? What's so hard about!! The idea is to make software easy to use and navigate. Not a hunt.

Sadly, that's not a real option for those of us whose jobs make it very hard for us not to have PCs running windows and windows apps at home. Plus, I admit I enjoy playing computer games on my PC, and very few of the ones I enjoy are available for Linux. Heck, my spouse recently gave up his long-time loyalty to Macs for this reason and bought his first windows PC.

Of course, this is the problem. Microsoft has virtual monopoly, so one has to be something of an activist to give it up.

This is ridiculous. I did not install copilot, it was done automatically by Microsoft. I do not want this feature and I want to be able to remove it very quickly and easily.

Same.

It's frustrating that all the suggestions for turning it off in outlook either don't work and aren't even designed for the actual interface and menu content I have, whether on the new outlook or classic, or they involve complex, multi-step processes that could really screw up my computer.

Given the lack of awareness that most advice seems to have regarding what their products actually look like to users with up-to-date versions of Windows 11 and their office apps, I'm not at all confident following advice that involves finding and deleting specific deeply buried folders (that often aren't even there), using command prompts, or editing the registry.

So for now I am stuck writing emails while the little "try copilot!" prompt keeps appearing in front of and between the lines I'm typing. I actually know how to write. It's a skill I worked hard to develop back in school and over my professional lifetime, and it's stood me in good stead. I do know the difference between formal and informal writing styles as well, and know when to use each. Stop insulting your users' abilities and trying to force us to use yet another product that "dumbs" things down even more than your current grammar checking and sentence finishing programs do.
