Sending of password for user ****** did not succeed. Mail server outlook.office365.com responded: Authentication failure: unknown user name or bad password.

When I try to check my e-mail in Thunderbird, I am getting this message: Sending of password for user ****** did not succeed. Mail server outlook.office365.com responded: Authentication failure: unknown user name or bad password.

I can get into my e-mail online with Microsoft Office 365, but for some reason, I now cannot use Thunderbird to download my messages as usual. Any suggestions?

Hello there, my name is Romano, I am an Independent Advisor for Microsoft Teams and I will be glad to help you with this question.

If you're trying to add your Outlook.com account to another mail app, you might need the POP, IMAP, or SMTP settings for Outlook.com. You can find them below or by going to https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?linkid=858201

If you want to add your Outlook.com account to a smart device like a home security camera, you'll need an app password. To learn more, see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/add-...

Please see link below for more information.

And if it doesn't still help, check the link below. They also had the same issues.

Hi Romano M.!

I have the same problem as C. Brown, starting form last week.

Checked all the settings again (POP settings). Created new app password, but nothing.

I get the same message.

I tried with OAuth2, but I get SMS code each time the mail client tries to read the mails.

It worked fine for years. There were any settings change last week?

Have a nice day!

Cristian M.

The thunderbird 107 beta 3 ask the web authentication once in My PC. (Cookies allowed as default. but I set the never accept the third party cookies after Oauth2 done)
The "
oauth://login.microsoftonline.com (https://outlook.office.com/IMAP.AccessAsUser.All https://outlook.office.com/POP.AccessAsUser.All https://outlook.office.com/SMTP.Send offline_access)" is remembered in the password if let it remembered just as it does for pop or imap.

Thank you for your response, but I am not sure what you mean... I use Windows 7 and the problem seemed to happen after I downloaded a Thunderbird update. I can send e-mail from the account, but no email is being received. I can login to my account Online with no problem, but I haven't found any solutions from Mozilla/Thunderbird, either. I haven't received any email through my POP account since October 20th. I keep getting two error messages that seem to be from Office365: Sending of password for user xxxxx@xxxxx did not succeed. Mail server outlook.office365.com responded: Authentication failure: unknown user name or bad password. And, Sending of password for user xxxxx@xxxxx did not succeed. Mail server outlook.office365.com responded: Connection is closed. 12. I then get this message: Login to server outlook.office365.com with username xxxxxx@xxxx failed. I am not sure how to remedy this? Thank you for any help you can give me. (:

I have been having the same problem for several weeks, on two computers with different email clients.

In one I have Thunderbird 102.4.2 and four email accounts. On the other computer I have Outlook 2010 and one account.

All have the same behaviour, they reject the user when trying to get new emails but are able to send.

Nobody appears to have an answer...

On Thunderbird, after changing the authentication method to OAuth2, it shows what appears to be a browser window asking for the account password and then asks if we trust that application and want to add it to our applications.

After doing that, going to https://myapps.microsoft.com/ does show Thunderbird on the list.

Following that, the next attempts at looking for emails were successful and it didn't ask for the password any more.

Too bad I cannot do the same on Outlook 2010, as it looks like it's "too old" and doesn't have OAuth2.

Well, I hope this helps.

Unfortunately for me Thunderbird keeps asking for password every time with OAuth2 + SMS. I checked into MyApps. Thunderbird is there.
