Return Code 554: Denied

Our office is having trouble sending emails to clients and keep getting this error:

[Return Code 554] sid: :: Denied [9fogic.net] (Mode: normal)

This has never happened before (years) and starting this morning, emails that go to the same clients as before are coming back now as Return Code 554: denied.

This isn't the case for all emails going out, and some are being delivered, but almost all are coming back with this return code.

It is happening on 3 different computers. One is running outlook 2010 and the other 2 computers are running outlook 2013. It is happening from 3 different email addresses as well.

I checked with our email hosting account and ran test emails through the web based server and they all worked fine. The issue is with Outlook.

Unfortunately, after I spoke with Microsoft they informed me I would have to pay $500 for an answer! We run a very small business and can't afford that!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello Jimmy,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for posting your query.

Let me assist you with Outlook issue.

1) Mention the type of email account configured in Outlook (POP, IMAP, Exchange Active Sync or Exchange)?

2) Is your computer connected to a network or domain?

If the email account is configured as POP, open Outlook, click on File, Account Settings, Account Settings, select the email account and click on change, More settings and then Outgoing Server.

If the option “My outgoing server requires authentication” is checked, uncheck it or vice-versa and try to send the emails and check if it works as expected.

I hope the above information helps. Let us know if you need further assistance.

Thank you.

We are using IMAP

We have our email hosted through GoDaddy - we have never had a problem before and all of a sudden this came up.

Authentication is checked as that is the setting GoDaddy says to use when setting it up in Outlook.

We haven't changed any settings at all. I don't understand how this happened!

Hello Jimmy,

Thank you for your reply.

Try to remove and re-add the email account in Outlook and check if the IMAP account works as expected.

If the above step fails, let’s create a new Outlook profile configure the email account in Outlook and check if the issue gets resolved.

554 is an error from the SMTP server telling you that it will not accept the message. This can be due to multiple reasons. One is because your mail provider has the sending domain in a blacklist. One is because you're not properly authenticating to the outgoing server. One us because the server thinks the domain contains a reserved word. One is because the SMTP server's spam filter sees something it doesn't like. One is because the IP address of the sending system and the domain of the sending system don't match (reverse DNS doesn't report the correct domain name).

Of all of these, I think the failure to authenticate to the outgoing server is the most likely and also the one you most readily can fix. Click File>Account Settings>Account Settings, double-click the account, click More Settings, then select the Outgoing Server tab. Make sure the "My outgoing server requires authentication" is selected. Usually, "Use the same credentials as the incoming server" is the correct value as well, but not always. You can use different mail providers for incoming and outgoing, in which case the SMTP server credentials will be different from the IMAP or POP server credentials.

The "my outgoing server requires authentication" is checked and the "use same setting as my incoming server" is checked.

The errors do not come from all the emails I send out, only some. It is happening with other emails in our office too. All using outlook.

Godaddy provides a web based email client. Sending and receiving emails through that works perfect. If I receive a return code 554 from outlook, I log on to  the web based server and send it that way just fine.

What other options do I have? If I delete the email account and set it up again will I lose all of my saved emails and email addresses?

Some errors I received today:

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

A message that you have sent could not be delivered to one or more recipients.  This is a permanent error.  The following address failed:

[Return Code 554] sid: G :: bounce 1 recips: Denied [3a43ogic.net] (Mode: normal)

GoDaddy's server is, then, rejecting your connection. It is definitely a server-side error. Enabling diagnostic logging may give you some clue into why.

Brian, I have tried that. I am finding that it is returning my mail the same way if I log into GoDaddy site too. It is only sending about 2% out!

Driving me nuts!  I can't work like this!

Thank you for responding!

Well, it is 1/2 resolved. I am going to try tomorrow to get it further resolved.

I have spoken to two different customer service reps at GoDaddy and they each have partially resolved my issue. Maybe tomorrow will be the day!!!

I am really regretting my 10 year commitment!

 Thanks!
