Outlook 2016 - Receiving blank emails.

I had to start a new thread as the others were locked.

I have been receiving blank emails in my inbox. Blank meaning no information, e.g., To, From, Subject, etcetera... Only the arrival time. I tried the suggestions on the forums and the KBs; short of uninstalling and reinstalling.  None of those have worked for me. My attempts included, but were not limited to, changing registry setting, disabling and reinstalling antivirus.....you have read the posts

So I set out to reliably recreate the problem, hoping to stumble on a viable solution.

I found that Outlook (2016 in my case) give a small "text like" warning about the Send button, when you are replying to an email that is being tracked as a conversation. This warning basically states you are no responding to the latest email in the conversation.

Here is an image of that warning

Image

Heed this warning.

In my case, when testing, my Outbox and Sent Box accurately show the email leaving my machine. But the inbox gave me a blank message devoid of any information except the arrival time. When I changed to the latest email in the conversation and tried it, the message was delivered intact.

I don't know if it is possible to disable the feature that tracks this or if it would even help, but I wanted to get a note out to the other folks who are having these blank email show up in their Inboxes and let them know. - Its not you :) Its the sender :(

Although it doesn't fix this issue, I do hope it helps people work around the issue until we can figure this one out.

Regards,

WB

An update:

I am running Version 1811 from Build 110229.20108. Which is part of Office 365. I acquired this via the Microsoft Store.

I did not create a new profile and attempt to try to recreate this issue. If time permits, I will do so and post my findings.

Per rocaw's request; I will also attempt to use the "recorder" tool and provide where appropriate

I did turn off as much of the conversation tracker/tool that I could and still had the same issues. But have read that, at least part of, the conversation tracker stays active through the Conversation Clean Up tool.

Please use a grain of salt when reading the next part. I am not attempting to draw a connection, but rather, explain why I have not been able, in my opinion, to completely disable the conversation feature built into Outlook.

As described by Microsoft: “Conversation Clean Up evaluates the contents of each message in the conversation and SHOULD (emphasis added) only delete redundant messages. If a message is completely contained within one of the replies, the previous message IS (emphasis added) deleted.”  …  “This feature is most useful on conversations with many responses back and forth, especially with many recipients. You are also unable to disable this feature completely. …” the discussion link is here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_outlook-mso_other-mso_2016/outlook-2016-how-to-disable-conversation-cleanup/95bbb84e-82b4-4259-a55b-c3eae6401a7f

Again - not attempting to draw a parallel, just pointing out my path.

But...I have noticed  this "blank email" issue, in my case, seems to be circling around replies to email conversation.

Hope it helps.

Hi wkboat17,

I appreciate your response. Since it's best to isolate the issue by checking if it's an application or account issue. Kindly update us with the result of the steps provided by rocaw.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Regile Reb and rocaw - I have the Step Recorder file ready. Please provide a PM so that I can provide it to either of you.

Folks, for additional information on this issue:

I am using a POP server (I know, not my choice). Messages send from my Outlook client are blank by the time they get to the server. So I am abandoning the server as a source/cause (for now).

I did not see this issue when I generated emails, reply or resend, from the OWA interface.

My client sent box, does show the complete and correct email. The inbox shows a blank email with just a valid arrival time.

When using Reply and Reply All, from the active mailbox or the archive, I did not notice the warning ("...not responding to the latest email..."). When the warning wasn't present Outlook seemed generating accurate emails.

I did notice the this seems to be linked more to the message "resend" option, from the actions pull down menu, when you are using the "active mail box". I say "active" as I did not see this issue when "resending" a email from an archived email.

This active mailbox verses archived suggests that, perhaps, the Conversation Clean Up tool does not index achieved items. But I have not had the time to dig deeper into this Conversation Clean Up hypothesis. For clarity; I am not saying this is the issue, just trying to work through on the variables here and identify the commonalities.

Hope it helps.
