If you are using the new interface of Outlook.com, you can manage the mail option by following the steps below:
- Click Settings icon.
- Choose Options.
- Under Layout, click Reading pane and you select your preference.
If this still doesn't suit your preference, double-clicking the email would open a new window. We suggest that you try to only click it once to open the email on the Reading pane.
If you require any further information, feel free to let us know.
Regards.

Thank for your response. You can still go back to the classic version of Outlook.com. You just need to select the Outlook beta toggle at the top right corner of the screen and turn it off. Check this link for more information.
For any other concerns, don't hesitate to get back to us.

Nope. I appreciate your willingness to respond, but this is getting tiresome. There is no toggle in the upper right hand corner of the Outlook screen I am viewing, and therefore, I cannot use the non-existent toggle to get rid of this new version of Outlook that was pushed out to me without my knowledge or consent. All I really want to do is change a default in the new program so that, when I open an email to read it, it defaults to "open in a separate window." There is a menu selection for that, so there is no reason why I should not be able to set a default to do that automatically. Why would I want to do that? Because, as I have explained, some emails sent by Web programs are being automatically resized in the new Outlook's Reading pane. They become so small that I can't read them, and that's really a "pane," if you will pardon the pun.

Thank you for your feedback. Classic Outlook.com cannot be reverted back anymore since it has more responsive web development framework that delivers an upgraded search feature. A smarter inbox, better personalization, additional updates will be rolled out over the next few months, including updates to Calendar and People. Please see Get help with the Outlook.com beta, and if your issue isn’t mentioned there, let us know.
For any other concerns, don't hesitate to get back to us.
