Missing Outlook.pst file from Outlook 2007 in Windows 7

Hello,

Please help me. I have this big problem, and I think is caused by a virus or malware program. Now the computer was scanned and looks clean, but I am not sure what was in the past. When I try to open Outlook 2007 in Windows 7, the window stops opening and only this message is on display: "Cannot open your default e-mail folders. File access is denied. You do not have the permission required to access the file C:\Users\.......\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst."

I was looking in "......\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\", but there is no such file there. I can find there a folder named "Outlook.pst", not a file. And that folder has inside only 3 folders; each of these 3 folders has the name of some old messages from my e-mail inbox; the names are real, I recognize them, but if I try to open one of these 3 folders, each of them has a single file named "body", which can not be opened (the computer is asking me about what program to use for opening these files, and Outlook is not on the list).

I was trying to search for pst files with Windows Explorer, I can see a list of some real messages, but none of them can be opened. If I look for "outlook.pst" file, nothing can be found.

If I use SCANPST.EXE, nothing can be found.

If I try to open Outlook in Safe Mode, the same Outlook window is opened, with that long message on display. Same as if I run Outlook as Administrator. In fact, Outlook can not be opened no matter what I try.

I used some programs to retrieve deleted files from computer, pst file is nowhere in the list.

What can be done? The pst file is gone forever? I mean, I have lost all the messages? I should reinstall Outlook?

Dear MirceaAL,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

According to your description, the Outlook.pst file is missing in Windows 7, Outlook 2007. Don't worry, you can try the following suggestions to troubleshoot this problem, I hope my suggestions can help you.

First of all, I want to explain to you that currently Windows7 and Outlook 2007 have ended their life cycles, but don't worry, I will still provide you with some suggestions to troubleshoot this problem, but some Settings in my test environment may be different from Windows7 operating system, please understand.

You can refer to the life cycle of Windows 7 and Outlook 2007 Windows 7 - Microsoft Lifecycle | Microsoft Learn and Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 - Microsoft Lifecycle | Microsoft Learn

First, you can find User Accounts - Mail (Microsoft Outlook) in the Control panel and click Email Accounts.

Check to see if the pst file exists in all your email accounts

C:\Users\.......\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst

If the.pst file does not exist in any of your email accounts, click Date Files to remove this .pst file. Then try to reopen your Outlook 2007 to see if it works.

If the above suggestions still do not help you open Outlook normally, I can only recommend that you create a new Outlook profile for your email account. Can you refer to how to create a profile Create an Outlook profile - Microsoft Support.

I hope this information was helpful. If you have any questions, please let me know, I will be happy to help you further.

Have a good day.

Best regards

Hello Jim,

Thank you very much for reply.

I do have a question. You say: "If the.pst file does not exist in any of your email accounts, click Date Files to remove this .pst file."

I have this for e-mail:

and this for Data Files:

If I select here any file and push "Open Folder", it takes me to the folder "Outlook.pst"......and there is nothing I can do, see my first message.

If I select here any file and push "Settings", I get this message:

"The specified device, file, or path cannot be accessed. It may have been deleted, it may be in use, you may be experiencing network problems, or you may not have sufficient permission to access it. Close any application using this file and try again."

So, please tell me, what do I have to remove?

Best regards,

Mircea

Dear MirceaAL,

First of all, thanks for your reply. First of all, thanks for your reply. In the screenshot you provided, I see that your two email accounts are using the same.pst file? What changes did you make before this?

If you use the same.pst file for both email accounts, I can only recommend that you create a new Outlook profile for your email account. About how to create a profile, you can refer to Create an Outlook profile - Microsoft Support.

I hope this information was helpful. If you have any questions, please let me know, I will be happy to help you further.

Have a good day.

Hello Jim,

I am not an IT specialist, I just use computers. The Outlook profile was configured by somebody else in the past, he is not working with us anymore. So, if you see the same pst file there for two different e-mails....I do not why, it was not done by me. And I do not know if there were two different pst files when the computer was normal, before my Outlook was blocked. It should have been configured each e-mail with his own pst file in the original profile?

Anyway, you tell me to create a new profile, that means this is the end, the old messages are lost?

And another question. I will try to create another profile, if the existing Outlook will never let me save the new profile, I should delete and reinstall Outlook?

Thank you for understanding and support.

Best regards,

Mircea
