Installing Outlook 2017 on new computer launches Office 365 Outlook

Hi,

I'm attempting to install Office 2017 (which included Outlook 2017) on a new computer (really attempting to transfer it from a dying one). I launch the installer from my Microsoft account "Subscriptions and Services" webpage and the installer completes normally. When launching Excel and Word the 2016 versions launch normally. However, when launching Outlook I get the Office 365 version. Drilling down into the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16 folder and launching Outlook directly still gives me the Office 365 version. This is the same folder that the Office apps are installed on my old pc. I did notice that the new pc start up process, after hooking up to my Microsoft account, appeared to initially install the Office apps, possibly making my attempts to install redundant. I've tried repairing but nothing changes.

Any ideas on how to get the 2017 installed correctly?

Thanks in advance!

Hello GlennL122

Hi, I'm Karl and will be happy to help you today.

#1 - Am assuming that when you refer to '2017 you actually mean '2016 (there is no Office '2017). Office editions are '2013, '2016, '2019, '2021 and '365.

What license appears when you log into the Microsoft Account associated with Office under <Services & Subscriptions>

https://account.microsoft.com/services/

#2 - Every edition of Office '2016 or later (including '365) installs in the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16" for 64 bit installations and "C:\Program Files\ (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16" for 32 bit installations so what you described is normal

#3 - Virtually every new computer comes with a 30 day trial of Microsoft 365 installed. Would it be correct to assume that you did not uninstall this trial version before installing your version of Office?

#4 - Just in case this is applicable, Office Home & Student does not include Outlook which would cause Outlook '365 to be launched.

What I would suggest is starting over by uninstalling all versions of Office on your new computer using the Microsoft SARA uninstall tool

https://aka.ms/SaRA-officeUninstallFromPC

As described in the following article

Uninstall Office from a PC
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/unin...

#5 - When that done, reinstall your version of Office keeping in mind that the only version of Office that does not include Outlook is Office Home & Student (any edition)

You’re right, it is 2016 (flying fingers are to blame).

From my Microsoft account:

Office Home & Business 2016 for PC

Added to your account on December 21, 2017

And from the Outlook on my pc, the “Office Account” screen

Microsoft® Outlook® 2016 MSO (Version 2205 Build 16.0.15225.20028) 32-bit

Product ID: 00333-59083-44691-AA411

Note that the Outlook icon is present in the 2nd column.

My installed versions of Word and Excel 2016 show the same series of icon.

You assume correctly.

I disagree, see above.  Even the installer’s splash screen shows the Outlook icon.

Will try this and let you know what happen.

See pic above…there was some version of Office Home and Student that did include Outlook.

I'm a little lost here. The pic you included came from Outlook in the <Office Home & Business> edition - not <Home & Student>, those are two entirely separate editions.

Can assure you that there has never been any version of <Home & Student> that included Outlook since that edition was first released but whether there was or wasn't really has no bearing on this at this point.

Have I missed something since just going from the screenshot you included, everything appears to be functioning normally if what you provided came from your new computer. If it didn't, did you follow the steps to uninstall everything and then reinstall '2016 from your Microsoft Account?

Karl,

You're right, I crossed up the Home & Office vs Home & Student in my brain and in the posting. Sorry!

I've uninstalled per your instructions multiple times and the version of Outlook that gets installed via the installer link in my account is the Office 365 version. I need the desktop version originally included with Home & Office 2016 as I have hundreds of emails saved and archived in the .pst files that I can't afford to lose. I checked the product id on the installed versions on the old pc and all (excel, word, outlook, etc.) have the same product id: 00333-59083-44691-AA41 if that's any help.

Thanks!

Glenn

Need to clarify what you mean exactly by the "Office 365 version" especially since you referring to the use of PST files. If you are using the Outlook '365 desktop version of Outlook, it would look like the screenshot when you click on <File> --> <Office Account> - not to mention that if you open any other Office aop and click on <File> --> <Account> you would see the same thing. It is not possible to have '2016 and '365 installed on the same system. Any edition of Outlook desktop can access PST files - the same steps apply for '365 as they do for '2016 (very little difference in the interface)

The op part shows what it would show for a perpetual license and the bottom if a '365 subscription edition is being used.

Are you perhaps referring to accessing an Outlook.com account via webmail (using your browser)? How exactly are you launching Outlook because something is missing from this description.

The version of Office Home & Business 2016 I originally purchased includes the classic desktop version of Outlook. Screen shot (taken from the old pc) of the "Account" page in that app shows this: (notice the "About Outlook" reference):

On the new pc, aunching Outlook from the "Start" menu (after uninstalling, scrubbing and re-installing for the umpteenth time) I get an Office 365 login screen, the classic version (on the old pc) does not. (btw all of the other Office apps launch to the correct classic versions, only Outlook doesn't)

My conclusion is that the installer link on the MS My Account "Products you've purchased" page is not representative of the version of Office Home & Business 2016 that I purchased.

Can you escalate this to the Office team for investigation?

Thanks for all of your help!

Glenn

Several pounts

#1 - The most relevant screenshot(s) would be from the new computer. What you have described is really hard to follow. There is no way one installer would result in 2 different versions of an app being installed so there is something else at play

Just to confirm, when you uninstalled Office - was it done via the SARA uninstall tool

#2 - Re: "Can you escalate this to the Office team for investigation?"

Just so there is no misunderstanding, this is a public user-to-user support forum. We're users just like you helping other users. We do not work for Microsoft and have no access to any user account so there is nothing we can do or check from within the forum.

You will have to submit this issue to Microsoft Office Support directly who will be able to connect to your computer if necessary which we cannot to from within the forum
