How to see all my new email - including ones that go straight to folders?

I set up rules to forward emails into folders. Now I don't know when I've received a new email because it does not appear in the inbox, but only in the folder. How do I know when a folder, sub-folder etc has a new email? Is there some way for me to see all the new emails I've received, even the ones sent straight to folders?
Hi, my name is Neil, I'm an independent expert adviser for Microsoft and a Windows user like you.

When setting up your rule, click on More Options.

This will bring up a bigger window with more options.

Here you can add an action, like Move to (folder) and afterwards the option to add another action will appear. You can add an action like Mark With Importance which should show you there is a message in that folder waiting for your attention.

Hope this helps! :)
Neil :)

If you are using Office Outlook, you can create an unread folder under the Search folder.

All unread emails in any folder for that account will show.

No search is available for new emails.

In outlook.com and the outlook app, the folder list will show the number of unread emails in each folder.

To add to Ron's answer -  Outlook.com doesn't have the unread search folder but you can view all unread messages using instant search.  Type isread:no in the search field.
