How to get Outlook 365 to download Gmail following the introduction of compulsory 2-step notification???

A month or two ago, the news that Google would be introducing compulsory 2-step notification forced me to upgrade from Outlook 2010 (with which I was perfectly happy!) to Office 365. All seemed to go well, until last week ...

There was a day or so when Gmail on Outlook would neither send nor receive, then that cleared ... However, a couple of days back, the problem returned, and shows no sign of resolving.

Not being extremely technological, I would be very grateful if someone could advise exactly what steps I need to take to return to a situation where Gmail on Outlook works seamlessly, as I need to be able to use this on both my home log-in (with a personal Gmail address) and also my office log-in (where I download from my boss's Gmail address). I hadn't twigged, for example, that I do need to enable two-step notification on my Google account (now done, but to no avail!)

For information, I've always used POP email and I don't want to have to change to IMAP.

I agree rose focus I am a fellow Microsoft 365 subscriber..

I think Google is bullying Microsoft and wish Microsoft would be more aggressive with Google to protect its own interests,

Personally I dislike Gmail -it s so restrictive and user unfriendly compared to MSoft Outlook

Yesterday MVP Karl Timmerman replied to a post from a member with Outlook 2016.

He quoted turning off 2 factor Authentication and .selecting Trusted Devices next time she rebooted.

Within my Google account i do not (or seemingly do not) get such option.

So frustrating to lose Outlook email functionality due to an invasion by Google ( Google = Russia v Ukraine).

How can we regain Outlook email access.? I was forced to turn on 2 factor authentication because "next screen" would not appear unless one selected this option. Today I turned off 2 factor and my Google account shows correctly my 2 devices -laptop and phone but I still cannot get an option to record them as Trusted Devices which can bypass the need for 2 factor ID. FYI even though I enter correct passwords for Google -still no luck in getting Outlook to send or receive emails even after entering a Google 6 digit code they texted me.

Help please

Neil F

Dear rose,

Thanks for choosing Microsoft community!

Combined with your description, I noticed that your problem seems to be about your outlook not being able to send and receiving the mail.

At first, please kindly try to login OWA(outlook web app) to check the result.

In addition, based on your description, Sometimes, one of Outlook's add-ins will crash and prevent your email messages from sending. To disable all add-ins, you can start Outlook in safe mode. If you can send email while Outlook is in safe mode, creating a new Outlook email profile should allow you to send email again. To start Outlook in safe mode, click the Windows key. In the search box, type outlook.exe /safe and press Enter.

Occasionally, the Outlook program may need to be repaired. Repairing is a simple process, but may take as long as half an hour to complete. For more information, see Repair an Office application.

At the same time, for many types of email accounts, Outlook stores your messages in a Personal Folders File (.pst file). You can repair this file by running the Inbox Repair Tool. This repair should take approximately fifteen minutes. For more information, see Repair your Outlook personal folders file (.pst).

If problem persists, please kindly create a new profile, for more information on creating a new email profile, see Create an Outlook profile.

To narrow down the scope of question, I would like to collect more information to do further research:

In general, when we are unable to send an email, we receive an NDR. (non delivery report) This will contain some error messages and error codes to facilitate troubleshooting, if you receive it, please share a screenshot with me.

Regarding your description, such a problem has occurred for the second time, so did there be some strange phenomenon before the problem occurred or did you make some special changes? And how did you solve this particular situation the first time it occurred, and what method was used?

Regarding the error that you cannot receive or send emails, is it for all users or some special users?

Sincerely,

Kerry Chen | Microsoft Community Moderator

Thanks for being there, Neil - it's good to know that one's not going totally insane when caught, as a not-very-IT-cognisant person, between Russia and Ukraine!

I'm happy to say that, although I'm still working on what to do with 'shared' Gmail addresses on Outlook, I have finally managed to work out how to sort out my personal Gmail on Outlook. The key was realising that an upgrade to Outlook 365 was, on its own, not enough: I also needed to implement ‘sign in with Google’. (Essentially, I deleted my Gmail account from Outlook and added it again, with the 'app password' instead of my normal one.)

I've had problems enough with Microsoft over the years, but on this occasion, I lay the blame entirely at Google's feet!

... I don't know if my post higher up the thread is of help here?

It is all very annoying!

Two step verification complete. That's two hours of my life that I'll not EVER get back. Meanwhile, the Microsoft Outlook/Google "TEAM" is downloading every email that I've ever received or sent. Then, it sent out a security alert. If there's a security alert, you'd think it would not dump it's entire memory on someone who might be sketchy? Silly. NRN.
