How to fix error (0x8004010F) Outlook data file cannot be accessed?

I have two email accounts (one is Yahoo and the other is Earthlink) in Outlook of my desktop. They were both working fine until last night. I think I changed something to load online backup file. Now I cannot connect my Earthlink account, so I cannot see old emails, send or receive anything. I get error the message "Sending reported error (0x8004010F): Outlook data file cannot be accessed." and the same error message for Receiving. I deleted the Earthlink account in my mail account in Setting and added it (to IMAP) back again , but it still doesn't work. Please help.

< Changed to a question.

Hi,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

It seems that you’re experiencing issues with your Outlook data file. The error message “Sending reported error (0x8004010F): Outlook data file cannot be accessed” typically occurs when the Outlook profile becomes corrupted. Let's work on this together in finding the best possible solution to this problem.

To better understand the situation, I would like to ask some questions, such as:

While waiting for your response, here what you can do to possibly resolve this problem. First of all, try locating the default Outlook data file for your Earthlink email account. To locate the default Outlook data file, please follow these steps:

1. Open Outlook.

2. Click on the "File" tab in the top left corner.

3. Click on "Account Settings" and then select "Account Settings" again from the drop-down menu.

4. In the "Data Files" tab, you will see a list of all the data files associated with your Outlook account.

5. The default data file will have a checkmark next to it and will be labeled "Outlook Data File" or "Personal Folders File".

6. You can also click on "Open File Location" to open the folder where the data file is stored on your computer.

You can then repair your Outlook Data files. You can follow the guide on this support article - Repair Outlook Data Files (.pst and .ost) - Microsoft Support. Please take some time reading the content of this article to avoid further complications.

If the problem persist, you can then try creating a new Outlook profile. You can then re-add your Earthlink/Yahoo email accounts - Create an Outlook profile - Microsoft Support

I hope this helps. Looking forward for your response soon!

Sincerely,

Leonardo_Y

Hi Leonard,

Thank you for your detail reply. To answer your questions, I am using Outlook desktop application, and I am using Microsoft Office Home and Business 2013.

While waiting for help the last few days, I contacted Earthlink Technical Support. The Earthlink Technician remotely logged into my Outlook desktop application attempting to repair the Datafile, but we were unsuccessful and kept getting the same error message Sending reported error (0x8004010F): Outlook data file cannot be accessed. He suggested and I agreed that he deleted the Outlook desktop Earthlink account (my Earthlink email address) and recreated another Outlook desktop Earthlink account (my Earthlink email address (1)). After the that, only my web Earthlink emails from early September to now were received into my Outlook desktop Earthlink email address (1), the older emails were not because there is a limit on the number of emails stored in web. At lease Outlook can now access my desktop Earthlink email address (1) account and I can receive and send emails.

I must have updated something in Microsoft last week and caused the Outlook desktop Earthlink data file corrupted. But interestingly my Outlook desktop yahoo email account is not impacted. When I upgrade something in the future, how do I backup the Earthlink data file to avoid this type of problem?

Hi Leonard_Y again,

I remember what I did on 9-22-2023! I clicked on the OneDrive backup on Cloud. It was taking a very long time to back up, I changed my mind and restarted my desktop to stop it. After my desktop restarted, I encountered the Outlook EarthLink email account problem. I just discovered the EmailBackupWizard_22_09_2023-56pst datafile in my desktop. Perhaps I should have opened this Outlook datafile within Outlook to address the Outlook datafile cannot be accessed error message? Any thoughts on this?

Thank you,

Zurio

Hi,

I appreciate the time and effort you spent on replying to my message.

To set proper expectation Zurio, Office 2013 license including your Home & Business 2013 ended its support last April 11, 2023. This also means that Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, bug fixes, or security fixes for Office 2013 vulnerabilities which may be subsequently reported or discovered. This includes security updates which can help protect your PC from harmful viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

  • You'll no longer receive Office 2013 software updates from Microsoft Update.

  • You'll no longer receive phone or chat technical support.

  • No further updates to support content will be provided and most online help content will be retired.

For your reference - End of support for Office 2013 - Microsoft Support

What I initially provided to you are the General troubleshooting applicable for all licenses.

Now for your question "how do I backup the Earthlink data file to avoid this type of problem?". I was not able to find any available article about it, so I recommend consulting this to Earthlink support team already.

Sincerely,

Leonardo_Y
