How to enable Oauth2 on Outlook desktop (not part of Office 365)?

Google has warned IMAP users of Gmail that "Less secure apps" access will be disabled after May 30.  The following link explains that apps that are not "Less secure" use Oauth2: https://superuser.com/a/1708278/767015

The Google warning message says that Outlook 2019 should have access that is not "Less secure".  I have Outlook 2019, but the dropdown list of encryptions has only SSL and TLS -- not Oauth2.

The aforementioned link explains that for Outlook 2013, Oauth2 can be enabled via a registry edit: (i) Go to HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Identity, and (ii) Create a DWORD "EnableADAL" with value 1.  I tried this on Outlook 2019, but still no Oauth2.  However, I had a registry folder "16.0" instead of "15.0" as shown above, and that is the registry path I used.

I also tried the registry edit (with "15.0") on another machine with Outlook 2013, and still no Oauth2.

How can I enable Oauth2 on Outlook 2019? Google claims can 2019 supports the required encryption.  What about Outlook 2013?

Hi, Jackn,

There is a *lot* of information on that page. I wasn't able to find where it says how to enable Oauth2 on an Outlook client (desktop app, not associated with Office 365). Does such a page exist?

Dear Jackn!

Business as usual - only referring to sites that does not help!!

Offer support and write solutions - otherwise do simply not write!

FrankyMacky did clearly mention whats the problem. Its the same problem on my site too - only to mention - how to use OAuth2 with outlook2019 desktop client. Your reply is NOTHING!

You from microsoft are turning off all basic auth methods - but u have no solution for all of us clients and users - thats the fact!

We all should buy monthly subscriptions from microsoft and only use cloud software - in your/microsoft mind!

But thats not real world! Speaking for me - I want an installed mail client - and I have bought license for Office2019 - so I want to use that with my office365 account (where I also pay for - its exchange online plan 1) - But I want to use it with IMAP - because I also use it with other devices/plattforms like android, linux, apple and so on.

Only to mention: thunderbird does OAuth2 without problems on same windows device!!

So - as u are from microsoft - simple tell us users why Outlook 2019 does not - and Thunderbrid does support OAUTH2 out of box- concerning IMAP.

AND TELL US HOW TO BRING OUTLOOK 2019 TO USE OAUTH2 with IMAP connect.

Plain text passwords in 2022 and yet we are meant to be secure by now? Makes you wonder why? Is there a hidden agenda at play, do they want us using plain text passwords for some reason?

I am having the same problem as Gerfried.

And I concur with all his points : empty answers, MS creating problems and not offering real solution (buying is not a real solution in many instances, and recurring payments are the worse of the non-solutions) while it is available elsewhere.

Only to give some feedback - it is nice to hear that I am not the only one with those problems.

Today - as microsoft disables basic auth methods on all acoount and many other things - some of my clients cannot connect via IMAP anymore - wether they use outlook 2019 or outlook 2016 - on mail refresh - the mail password has to be entered again and again.

And solution from microsoft not found since hours.

Office365 is no business solution mail and support service in my opinion - meanwhile we also had troubles forwarding mail to an external host - because Office 365 server declined the forward - some settings had to be done via power shell and exchange connect to get it working - its a shame - normally u should only enter the destination mail address for forwarding and it should work immediately.

In my case Offce 365 is not reliable for business usage - because u can never know if microsoft changes settings (surely for higher security :-)) from one day to another - and you get no mails the following day.

It ends in additional work for nothing...

It may be easier to use 2FA and an App Password than to turn on Oauth 2.

Hello Don!

This is all nice and cool - but in fact - some people only want to do their work.

For example a carpenter who uses Exchange Online Plan(1) with outlook and gets his orders via emails.

This guy does not want to use Mobile and MFA and whatever makes things more secure - simple as it is - mails should come in and go out.

Without getting orders to have full books for work the income will go to zero.

And many many other providers offer IMAP in a traditional way - with SSL for sure - but without apps, qr-code ...

It is nice that microsoft wants security - but I think it would be better to make windows and updates more stable and secure...

And how to turn on Oauth2 within Outlook 2016 - in my case it does not pop up to login - because we have several other mail accounts installed.

I also tried to generate a new mail profile - used IMAP settings to connect - also no pop-up came.

Important to mention - why Outlook 2016 - because of Windows 7 on this machine (it is neccessary cnoncerning old devices (really expensive devices >8000Euro) which are needed for their work, and their software to admnistrate those devices.

AND BTW why is there not tool from microsoft - a hotfix - to simple change your outlook to the new OAUTH2 (Outlook >2013) and submit the application to azure interface to decline or allow the access in future. I think a small exe could do the job - but if u look to some threads in the www u can see that people try everything (also powershell and connect to exchange online...) and it does not work.
