How do you import .ics files with new Outlook?

The new Outlook does not mesh well with Zoom meeting invites. I have added the Microsoft Outlook Plugin from Zoom. When I schedule a meeting in Zoom I get a dialog box to import an .ics file but it does not work. I went into the Zoom portal to get an .ics file. I clicked on the .ics to file with open with Outlook but the same issue occurs. The only way send a Zoom invite with the new Outlook is to set up a manual invite. This is less convenient than it was with the old Outlook.

Hello Zerep_nad,

Thank you for posting this case in the Microsoft Community!

Based on your description: How do you import .ics files with new Outlook? I would like to cooperate with you to work on this case. For my suggestion, you may try to check this article Import or subscribe to a calendar in Outlook.com or Outlook on the web which helps you to Subscribe calendar from the web or import a .ics file in New Outlook via going to New Outlook>Calendar>Add calendar.

If you need further assistance, you may also contact the New Outlook for Windows Support Team by clicking Help>Contact Support or Contact Support and provide feedback within the new Outlook for WindowsThe support team over there has higher permission than us, they can remotely help you and collect logs at your convenience. They can also involve more resources to investigate the issue from the backend side. This would be the most efficient way to handle this case for you.

Hope the above workaround will be helpful. If you need further assistance, please feel free to let me know, and I will keep assisting you.

Your understanding and patience will be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Community moderator

I experienced the same challenges with Outlook "not meshing well" with Zoom meeting invites, and while none of the links to Microsoft articles or recommended solutions posted here in the community resolved my issue, I've identified the solution for my challenges encountered. Though it involves multiple more clicks (to accept a Zoom meeting invite and get it imported into (saved to) an Outlook (New Outlook) calendar).

When sent an email with an invitation to register to attend a Zoom meeting, after registering to attend I immediately receive a follow-up email from the meeting organizer noting....Thank you for registering to attend.... with options to "Add to your Google Calendar," or "Add to your Outlook calendar." If selecting "Add to Outlook Calendar," you immediately observe a .ics file (the calendar meeting invite) is downloaded and appears in your "Downloads" file. To continue the process to add it to your Outlook calendar, you must click on the .ics file (appearing at top of your "Downloads" files), which results in a new Prompt box opening up - that prompts you to Drag & Drop or Browse (Navigate to) the file (.ics file) you want to open. Doing so will result in NO further progress/actions - unless/until you first complete the second action in the prompt box, which prompts you to "Select a Calendar" (while the label doesn't explain this, it means to "Select a Calendar" that you want to import the meeting invite (.ics file) to. The drop down options for names of calendars displayed didn't include my name, so I had to first step away from this prompt box and navigate in Outlook to the list of all my calendars (my own and those shared with me) to identify my own calendar name (In new Outlook, my own calendar is simply labeled "Calendar"). Once known, use the drop down arrow in the prompt box to select/choose the name of your calendar (or the calendar you want to save the meeting invite to). THEN, you can drag and drop the .ics file from downloads folder into the prompt box (or use the "Browse" button to navigate to the .ics file in the downloads folder, highlight it, then use "Open" button at bottom). Then must click on "Import" button at bottom of prompt box, and the .ics file (calendar meeting invite/hold) should indeed save to your Outlook calendar as expected. Though - in order to confirm it did save to your calendar it isn't immediately visible after selecting "import." (prompt box doesn't close and display the calendar). One must navigate to your Outlook calendar, navigate to that date, then can see the meeting invite/calendar hold has indeed saved to your calendar as expected.

Numerous more clicks are now involved after registering to attend a Zoom meeting, and receiving the email from the meeting organizer with the option to Add to Outlook calendar.

I don't have the 'upload from file' option on Outlook, only 'subscribe from web.'

Can you help?

Thanks

When I click on "Add to Calendar" from a Facebook event, it opens the downloaded ICS file inside "Mail" (New Outlook) and I see a completely dysfunctional dialog window:

This is a bug. Calendar apps must support opening ICS files to add a single event to a chosen calendar, cleanly, from the OS, like it's always worked since 1998.

The link you mention, does NOT deal with an ICS file, but rather a calendar.

The solution to "Add Calendar" is NOT descriptive for Adding an ICS file - as its an event, not a calendar

The only way I have found to add an ICS file in this "new" but crappy Outlook - takes at least five clicks that are definitely not intuitive

I recommend a menu bar item with ICS as the letter, press that and allow the ICS file to be imported>

I would add a video on this

rather than this

To import a .ics file in new Outlook, please go to Calendar-> Add Calendar from the calendar pane-> Upload from file-> Browse and select the file-> Import.

The issue isn't with Zoom, it's with Microsoft's own .ICS files. New Outlook doesn't open them by default. You need to Import each .ICS file individually by following these steps.

  1. Download the .ICS to your computer.

  2. Open New Outlook and go to the Calendar view.

  3. Drag & drop the .ICS file from step 1 onto the Calendar.
An Add calendar window opens on the Upload from file page.

  4. Select your calendar from the list, then select Import.

Another option (but it's more steps) instead of step 3 above, click the Add calendar button, select Upload from file, then Browse for the file from step 1, then continue to step 4.

This video / steps are for Classic Outlook. It's a different process for New Outlook.
