Hi, Outlook Mobile app is asking users to set a 8 digit PIN. Even after the Phone PIN has been reset recently and our Endpoint Managers device compliance policy is set to 6. Any ideas?

Dear Alistair Hutson,

Good day!

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community. We are happy to help!

I understand you have a query with the Device compliance policy in your organization.

Please understand that Mobile device management (MDM)/Intune/Endpoint Management is out of our support boundary.

To get the dedicated support we recommend you post this in our Intune (Mobile device Management) Q and A, once you open the link then you can post your query, and our Team, there will assist you with accurate information regarding your scenario.

Your kind understanding is highly appreciated. Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

Anesu | Microsoft Community Moderator

This is not a device compliance policy issue. This is an issue caused by the latest update to the app. The compliance policies were working as intended until Microsoft's latest update.

The exact same issue is impacting our corporate Android (OS 12 and 13) end users, running Outlook app version 4.2240.2 for Android). This started being reported by our end users Friday, October 28th -- and the Outlook app (4.2240.2) was released October 27th. No changes in our policies (EAS mobile device passcode for non-managed devices, or our Intune-managed devices). Both policies have been '6-digit' for several years. As of Oct 28th, android users are impacted -- in the Outlook App -- to change to an 8-Digit passcode or have their email account removed from the device.

As Keith has documented, it appears to be an issue/bug with Outlook app 4.2240.2 as the passcode policy is not changed. I have opened a case with Microsoft Enterprise support, but other threads indicate this is widespread to other MS customers.

We're also having this issue. It appears that previously the setting in Exchange forced a 4-digit code to be present on the device, however that changed with Outlook app v4.2240.2 where it is now enforcing a 6 or 8 digit passcode. There doesn't appear to be any patch note I can find for this.

I confirm that we have same issue as well, and no changes in policies as well. I just hope that MS acknowledges this at least.

Hello,

We are also seeing this from yesterday on company-owned and Personal Android devices. Users are being asked to create an 8-digit PIN on their device in order to use the Outlook Mobile App. Our current Exchange Mobile Device Mailbox policy has not been changed.

This is not a good experience as some staff using personal devices have ended up locking themselves out of their own devices as a result.

We have a support case opened.

Could Microsoft please confirm the status of this issue?

Looks like Microsoft have just released version 4.2240.4 of the Outlook App to the Play Store and this might have resolved it.

One of our users has reported that they can now go back into Security Settings on their device and change their PIN back to 6 Digits (which matches our policy) vs the 8 Digit PIN they were made to set earlier.

Might be worth getting some of your impacted users to try the same or at least download the update and see if the prompt goes away.

Yes, 4.2240.4 released sometime late Oct 31st appears to resolve the issue. However, Microsoft Premier Support (nor our TAM) responded to any requests, emails or our premier support ticket. Our company has asked for a formal response (we had executive users end up with factory reset personal phones because of the issue/prompt for device passcode changes, and the issue tied up global service desk and support teams for 4 days).

Thankful MS focused on the patch/app update to resolve, but it would have been great for Microsoft to at least provide some response or communication.

Agreed, if it helps anyone here are the instructions we have sent to our users:

We have just been made aware that Microsoft have released a new Outlook for Mobile update which appears to have resolved this issue.

If you are still seeing the message (and haven’t reset your PIN) then you can do the following:

  1. Open Google Play Store

  2. Search for Microsoft Outlook

  3. Install the available Update

  4. Once the update completes, restart your phone and Microsoft Outlook should then behave as normal

If you had already reset your PIN and want to put it back to 6 Digit’s then follow the above steps and once your phone has restarted you should be able to go into Device Settings > Lock Screen > Lock Screen Type and change your PIN back to 6 Digits.
