Chinese characters in email

Dear all,

is there any solution to the "chinese characters in email problem" yet?

When i am sending emails from my Live account using Outlook for iphone, and when the recipient opens the email in an ios mail program (me included when open the email in my iphone's preinstalled mail app), they get the message with just chinese characters.

Known problem for a long time as i see it in the Community, but is there a solution...?

Thank you.

/Niklas

Hi there,

Which font and language are you typing in?

Sometimes that can mean that the incorrect font is installed on the recipients machine.

Change the font and try again

Let me know how you get on

Hello NiklasNO,

I am sorry to hear that you are having difficulty sending e-mails with Outlook for iOS because both you and your recipient cannot render your email content. I know how irritating this can be and I wouldn't want it to occur on me either! Fret not, I am here to help you to resolve this issue.

In order for me to help you properly, I have a few clarifications to make:

1. Does it happen even when you use Outlook.com web version on a computer or other devices?
2. Is this a problem for just that specific recipient or everyone else?
3. How long has this been an issue?
4. Do you recall taking any action that could possibly result in this?
5. What are the troubleshooting steps have you taken thus far?
6. What account type did you setup your email as in the app? (IMAP, POP3, Exchange ActiveSync)

Are you a Chinese user? Using a Chinese keyboard or Chinese-origin iPhone?

Otherwise, I suspect that there is a configuration error with your email in Outlook for iOS, it might have been setup as UTF-16 instead of UTF-8 which results in miscoding as Chinese characters.

Please remove and re-add your email account in the app, with Exchange ActiveSync instead of IMAP/POP3. Do not alter default configuration details

I am looking forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

Hi Jordan,

thanks for your answer.

I am sending an email in Swedish to a Swedish recipient. The recipient told me that in iOS the email had all these chinese characters and also sent me a screenshot.

I then forwarded the message to Another email address of mine using my iPhone, opened it in Outlook on my iPhone and i looked just fine, but when i opened it in my iPhone's email program i got the same characters as he did.

So, the same device for sending and receiving (my own) but still different appearances regarding of which program I use for Reading. So, installed font could not be the problem I guess?

Thanks Sutharasan,

When using my computer, there is no problem.

I have though not installed the account as IMAP/POP3.

I will try and remove and re-add it again.

Hello NiklasNO,

Thank you for your response.

If removing and re-adding the email account does not help, please try to reinstall your Outlook for iOS app.

Otherwise, please try to write e-mails from iOS native Mail app as well and see if your text is written in the correct encoding. (by opening the written email on your PC/other devices)

It is either caused by the Outlook for iOS app or your iPhone keyboard.

Let me know.

Regards,
Sutharsan

Hi again,

no, removing and re-adding the account (a live.com account) did not do it, I get the same chinese characters when sending a new email from iPhone Outlook and opening it in iPhone iOS email app.

Strange.

Hi again,

so, I have done some tests now, and only when I am sending email from my Outlook app and my live.com account do I get this problem.

When I use my work email address in the outlook app, it does not appear.

When I use the live.com account in the iOS native mail app it does not appear.

Conclusion: there is something wrong with the Outlook app and the live.com account…
