Broken display of animated GIFs in Outlook MS365 / v2007

The current version of Outlook seems to be struggling with (some) animated GIFs. For instance, from a newsletter (view it online here) the display of the animated GIFs is completely broken. The original GIF is here.

The display in Outlook below (ignore the pause button, that is working as intended):

This is in Outlook through a MS365 subscription. Version 2007 (Build 13029.20344 Click-to-run). Windows 10, both before and after the 2004 update.

Is there anything that can be done about this?

Hi Björn L,

Thanks for the providing detailed information. May I know whether this issue happen with every GIF animations?

If the issue happen after update to latest version 2007 13029.20344. You may use the work around revert to earlier workable version using the steps listed here How to revert to an earlier version of Office 2016 Click-to-Run, if it is acceptable for you.

In the meantime, you can view the message in your Webmail on browser to see the animation.

Your patience and cooperation will be highly appreciated.

It doesn't seem to happen with all GIFs. I don't receive a lot of newsletters using animated GIFs, so I'm not sure how widespread the issue is.

An example of a newsletter where it does work (for me) is this gif from this newsletter.

The affected newsletters have links to webpage versions, so I can open them in a browser, and work around the issue that way.

If there's any further information I can provide to help resolve this issue, please let me know.

Hi Björn L,

Thanks for the reply. Since the issue doesn’t happen with all Gifs, it might be specific animated gif side issue. You may please keep the workaround to open them in a browser.

Moreover, in the meantime we will keep doing some research on our side to see if we can find any relevant information about the issue. Once we get any update, we will get back to you.

Your patience and cooperation will be highly appreciated.

Thank you for following up on this.

While the issue is dependent on the GIF file, it is also the case that it is only Outlook that has issues with these files. Any other application I've tried (which so far have only been browsers) have no problem displaying the images correctly.

Furthermore, the link you provided is a different issue. I know playing GIFs wasn't supported at all previously, but the issue here is not that the GIF won't play (as described on the The animated graphic in my e-mail message doesn't work page) but that the display is broken.

I'll keep using the browser-based workaround.

Again, thank you for your help and please let me know if any more information from my side would help.
