Alias mail adress is not shown in headers (dropped) when using OWA

Hello dear community,

I searched for this topic and I could not find any proper source for this problem.

I've created a mailbox, let's call it MAIN and I gave it an alias, and that is called ALIAS.

Whenever from the same domain/company using the Alias, we catch that alias from the header and trigger the rule to move it to the relevant folder. In the header it is shown as :

Content-Transfer-Encoding: binary
From: Sender <*** Email address is removed for privacy ***>

To: ALIAS <*** Email address is removed for privacy ***>

This works perfectly fine when the desktop app is used to send the mail.

However, if the sender uses OWA ( outlook web ), it does not put the alias as "TO" but the main, in the header

Content-Transfer-Encoding: binary
From: Sender <*** Email address is removed for privacy ***>

To: MAIN <*** Email address is removed for privacy ***>

Is there any fix for this?

Thanks

Hi Caner Bas,

Based on your description, I created an alias for the trial account and then conducted some tests. The result is the same as what you said, but I did not find anything in Message headers. To confirm what difference between Outlook desktop client and OWA, I ran two message traces to check the results, please see below pictures:

It shows the message trace of email I sent from the desktop app, we can see that the email is sent to the primary address first, and then the email is forwarded to the alias address.

But in this message trace of email I sent from OWA, we can see that the email is sent directly to the primary address, no redirected process. Therefore, I think it is more likely to use different email transfer protocols/processes between desktop applications and OWA, I did not find the official introduction about internal mechanism, it seems not public by Microsoft.

In this case, I suggest that you can achieve the purpose of classifying messages by changing the conditions that trigger the rule, your understanding is highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Linda
