One drive files after being restored from backed up files in upgraded windows, giving error message for some files- corrupt, couldn't open

Hi,

I've recently upgraded my windows 7 to windows 10 enterprise. I have onedrive account with files synced to cloud, before upgrading i've backed up onedrive files locally in my computer. Some of those files can't be opened after upgrade, formats include .docx and .xlsx and .png. Most of these files were in direct onedrive main/root folder rather than in subfolders. As i can see those images in subfolders can be opened but not doc and excel files.

How can i view those files again, why have they become corrupt, what could I do in future to prevent these problems

Hi Dinakar,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

We will assist you to troubleshoot the issue. Kindly let us know few more details so that we can assist you better:

  • Which application are you using to open the .png files?
  • Have you installed Microsoft-Office?
  • What happens exactly when you try to open those files? Do you get any error message or any error code?
  • Did you login to OneDrive.com and checked whether files are opening or not?

Please be informed that you need to have Microsoft Office installed in your device in order to open .docx or .xlsx files. You can also open the files through word online or excel online when you login to OneDrive.com in a web-browser.

Thank you for your reply.....

Now I've logged into One drive and have been using it, but I can't find my previous files in One drive; that's may be because I've logged in with "empty folder of One drive" from the same account I used previously before upgrading to Windows 10 and it synced. Now the problem is as i explained in previous post (can't open some of the files which were copied to local disc before upgrading)

I've been using Microsoft office 2015, and default Windows photo viewer and Picasa viewerThese were the error messages I've been getting.

Hi Dinakar,

Thank you for your reply.

We appreciate you for providing the screenshot.

  • Let us know if the issue is specific to some files or happening with other files as well?
  • Also, are the files which are not opening are currently inside OneDrive folder or not?

There is possibility that the files could have got corrupted. I suggest you to create a test .png as well as .docx/.xlsx files and check the behavior. You may also associate .png file with Windows Photo viewer as default and check. See the link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-10/change-default-programs-in-windows-10#

Also, repair Office program and check. Check the link: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/repair-an-office-application-7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b

Hi Dinakar,

As you've mentioned that other files are opening, then it seems there could have been some corruption with those particular files which are not opening. As a workaround, you can try a couple of things:

  • Make a copy of those files and check.
  • Try downloading the files and then open.
  • Try to open the files in other devices.

Report to us with the results so that we can guide you further.
