You have 16.79.1 which is the current channel update. Whether you got the current channel or preview channel the build is the same, but the log does indicate you're using the preview release.

What I'm trying to rule out is the installation of Excel. If you switch to the beta channel AutoUpdate will completely replace your install with the current beta channel build. Give that a try and see if the problem goes away.

The error log says there are problems with memory. That could be Excel fault, Mac OS fault, or hardware fault. The idea is to rule each possibility out one at a time.

it's still crashing, seems to occur when i open a document that has comments in it.

Hi Jim,

I've updated to beta 16.80 but no luck, it still crashes. You say there is an issue with the memory...could that be why my Macbook i7 16gb ram is slow, often crashes and is basically a bunky: a lemon of a computer. I've been disappointed with it since i bought it just before the M1 came out 😫

You hint that the crash is not just happening with one particular document and everything seems messed up system-wide. At the time of the most recent crash Word was using 40,900 MB of virtual memory RAM, which is a lot, and virtual RAM is slower than regular RAM.

I think it's time to take a look at your Mac's memory usage. Open the app called Activity Monitor. It's in Applications > Utilities. Click the memory tab. What do you see? Here's my mac at the moment. Notice at the bottom where it says Memory Pressure I'm in the green and am using zero swap, which is the ideal. Swap is bad.

If you look at the screen shot of memory being used, there are two apps grabbing most of it.

Zotero is taking a huge amount of RAM, followed by Obsidian Helper. It looks like Zotero might be the culprit in your crashes.

First thing to do is head to the Zotero web site and make sure that the version of Zotero you have is the current update. Check their support to see if using lots of RAM is a known issue.

Same thing with Obsidian Helper. I've heard of and have used Zotero (kinda like it, but EndNote is a lot better). I haven't tried Obsidian. I would like to hear your opinion, even though that's off topic.

The Windowserver item that's using a lot of RAM is Mac OS managing the windows. It usually takes up about a gig of RAM, so that looks normal to me.

thank you. i've submitted a debugging report to the Zotero forum. i could not find any known issues with RAM so submitted my own. i'm waiting to hear back. I'm yet to check the Obsidian forum, but will shortly.

I used to use EndNote years ago, i don't remember why i changed first to Mendeley, now Zotero. i like Zotero and Obsidian because they are open source so users can create plug-ins to share or sell (if they choose) which makes for very powerful software, i think.

I do not have any back-of-house computer knowledge, but am planning to learn. (i just learned how to count 9 in binary 🙂 1001) however, the user experience of Obsidian is nice. I have not transferred many of my notes across into Obsidian's markdown yet, so don't know how good or time-wasting it might turn out to be, but with what i have as notes in the Obsidian vault (folder), i like that i can link notes together and view my vault as an interactive map. It has a lot of plug-ins that i'm online not even near scratching the surface of, i'm planning to give it more time when this uni report is submitted very soon.

with your knowledge, i believe you would get a lot out of Obsidian, and it's free and markdown so if something happens to Obsidian, you still have the files in markdown. Maybe though you have a very organised filing system and retrieval system in your Mac that may make Obsidian a time sink, more than a productivity gain. you tell me 🙂

Thanks for the review of Obsidian. It sounds way to organized for a disorganized guy like me. I don't use Microsoft OneNote either. It takes too much time to save time.
