Excel Online help!

Hello!

We are 10 people, working on same Spreadsheet in Excel Online. So, there is big chance of deleting or changing the data already inserted. So, to rectify this, what we did, is we locked some important columns in the sheet. You can say, it is Semi locked now. But, another problem arose. We cannot comment on any cell. Means, when we rigt click, there is no option for comment. Moreover, if we go to Insert and then opt for Comment, then option is already grayed out. So, we are unable to comment.

Now, we want this feature of comment as we are translating some stuff, that's y it is of utmost importance to add comment.

If above is not possible, then, i am writing my requirement below:

  1. I want that, some cells must be locked, so that no one can edit.
  2. I want that i can comment on particular cell.

Is there any way to enable this?

How is the file shared and accessed by users?

Are the computers on network/domain?

If you’re referring to ‘Excel Online’ then you cannot lock cells or specific areas to protect them.

File is shared online, through email ids. All of them have microsoft one drive account. Moreover, anyone can Edit the file, as it is necessary. But, there is risk of deleting/or changing the text.

I now that we cannot lock cells in Excel Online, but what i did, is to lock the cells in Excel desktop and then re uploaded the file on one drive. Now, columns are locked, and works in same way as in Excel desktop. 

But the only problem is i cannot comment on even unlocked columns. It appears that, comment function does not works on Semi locked sheet. 

Help!!!

Hi Varun,

   I'm am trying to reproduce the issue as you describe. However even in Excel desktop protecting the worksheet disables the ability to comment on cells of the worksheet, so perhaps I am not following the same workflow on the desktop as you are?
