Errant File Conflict Message: "This file has been edited by another user" Word for iPad

From time to time Word on the iPad gives me an errant file conflict message.

This happens when I use the iPad task switcher to use another program, e.g., to look something up or copy a bit of text I want to paste into an open Word document. But it does not happen all the time.

So far I've been able to work out of this dilemma by simply using the same file name when the "Save As" dialog box appears. When asked if I want to overwrite the extant file I simply answer "Yes."

This happens when the file I'm editing is stored in my linked Dropbox account. I do not know if this happens when editing files that have been stored in OneDrive or not.

Three questions.

  1. Has anyone else experienced this?
  2. What is the cause of this bug?
  3. What is the fix?

Hello,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

In order to find a resolution for this issue we need more information. Let us know the following:

  1. Is the same file being shared with someone else and being edited or worked upon by some other user?

  2. If yes, then check if the file is open at the other person’s end and is being edited the next time when you receive this error.

Since you have mentioned about not having checked in OneDrive, I would suggest you to check if the issue happens in OneDrive. Upload a Word file to OneDrive and see if you can reproduce the issue while working on the file from OneDrive.

Check the above and let us know the result.

Thank you.

How'd I know you were going to ask that question?

In the middle of the night I woke and realized that I had not provided this important information. So, in answer to your questions:

1. No, the file is not being shared by someone else.

And no, I have yet to observe this behavior with OneDrive.

I suspect that this may in some way be related to sync issues with Dropbox.

Thanks...

I can now report that the same thing happens (it has happened at least once since I posted my earlier reply) that the same thing happens when I'm editing a document saved in OneDrive.

I was editing a document, the app saved the document (presumably to the cloud) and presented me with the same error message. I had to resolve the conflicts using the Review tab and then I was able to continue my editing.

Hi,

I would like to know if the issue is with only one particular document or is it with all other documents stored in Dropbox.

Have you installed the latest Dropbox updates for iPad?

Meanwhile lets backup all the documents in the Dropbox, delete all the folders, and then sign back into Dropbox and upload the documents and check if the issue persist.

I hope the above suggestion helps.

Thank you.
