error "0xc0000142" for any Office 2016 applications further to WIN10 cumulative update KB3081438

Further to installation of  WIN10 cumulative update KB3081438, I cannot launch any Office 2016 applications (Outlook, Word, Excel,...), getting the error "0xc0000142".

Note that I can sometines launch the application, but at next tentative, same error again.

Everything was OK before WIN10 cumulative update KB3081438.

More over, no problem with any other programs

I also tried to "repair" Office 2016 installation (fast & slow method), but no change.
I also have problem with the previous version Office 2013 (application not launching anymore., but without any error message !)

Looks like like last Win10 cumulative update has broken "MS Office".

=> could you give me a solution to get back Office ?

Regards

Same here ... I have uninstalled then re-installed Office 2016, but still no luck.

Interestingly, the "Installing Office" windows is stuck on about 95% complete, with all the Apps being displayed in colour above.  I can access each app via this option; however can't from the Start Menu or shortcuts etc.  It doesn't work if I try to open a document without having Office open first

I did notice Office 2016 was marked as being updated today in "Programs & Features", this was before I did the uninstall etc.

The Event Viewer has had 295 of these warnings over the last 24 hours:

Hello, not alone !

I post the issue on this other thread dedicated to Win10 (since it is maybe more related to Windows 10 System than Office ?), and I got a reply from MS support, but no effect ! (link)

Hope too that they will fix this problem in further updates.

UPDATE:

Tried everything; found some details on the net about using a MS tool to remove Office etc but nothing worked.  Uninstalled everything & re-installed but still not working, so in the end I gave up & uninstalled 2016 & installed 2013 which seems to work OK now. I'll review this again later this year when I will probably go for an Office 365 subscription, but for now there isn't that much difference in 2016 for me to spend any more time on.

Same for me : i finally did a Win10 clean install + Office 2013 (no more time to loose with Office 2016)... Everything was going fine up to Avast antivirus installation (Nothing happening clicking on Office icons). Hopefully I had to restore point and i removed it.

so looks like Avast is not fully Win10 ready (even if they say it...)

Hi All,

I've been frustrated with this issue for almost a week, and I was about to downgrade to Office 2013 so I could get some work done.  As a last resort, I uninstalled the WIN10 cumulative update KB3081438, rebooted, then reinstalled KB3081438 from Windows Update.  Now, Office 2016 works fine with no more errors.  I'm glad I didn't need to uninstall Office 2016.

Hope this works for you too,

Dave

Ok i tried it but still getting that annoying microsoft message :|

If i do it a couple of times, sometimes it launches the programs without problems. But most of the times doesn´t launch.

I was wondering if it's because of the program short-cut. Microsoft.Office.WINWORD.EXE.15

I ran into this problem after the win7 + office 2013 to win 10 conversion. Then i tried to uninstall office 2013 to try out this 2016 but i had a problem uninstall it. Then i went and used a fix tool from microsoft to correctly uninstall office 2013. After that i installed the 2016 and the short-cut looks like the image above.

Can you try installing the latest Win 10 updates? We think that this Win 10 update corrects the 0x0000142 error.

• Cumulative Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3081448).
