Email Credentials

For the past couple months Outlook 2016 (part of Office 365) has been insisting that I verify my email account credentials every time I send a message.  I have done a lot of online research and tried all the suggestions that I can find with no success.  I have two other email accounts on the same online server which I access with Thunderbird and they work just fine.

The problem is driving me to distraction.  If I don't soon find a solution I am going to scrap Outlook in favor of a different email program.

Hi Joseph,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

What type of account you have configured in Outlook.  (POP3, IMAP, Exchange ActiveSync or an Exchange account).

What is the domain of the email address?

Let us make sure that you are entering the credentials correctly.

Let us try to log into the webmail with the same credentials and check if you are able to sign in.

Do come back with the required information and we would be glad to assist you.

Thank you.

OS is Windows 7 Pro

Account type is POP3

Account domain is sbcglobal.net
Outgoing server is smtp.att.yahoo.com

Outgoing port is 465 with SSL

I easily log into the account using the same credentials through any browser and through Thunderbird.

The Outlook popup is already auto-filled by the application, all I have to do is hit OK and everything goes through just fine.  The real question is why am I getting the popup requester.  I have been using Outlook for more than 18 months with the same email account and same credentials.  It is only within the past few months that I have been getting the popup requester.

I suspect, but cannot prove, that some new security measure has been added to Outlook that is raising a flag because my Outlook email account is not the same as the email account with which I have registered Office 365 with Microsoft.  If that is the case, I think that Microsoft needs to take a look at the issue.

Hi,

Let us rename the protect folder and check.

To do that press win key + R (on the keyboard) to get the run command, then type in %appdata%, click on Microsoft, rename the “protect” folder.

Once done try typing in the password and check.

Hope this information helps you. Please let us know if you need additional information.

Thank you.

I had actually tried deleting and recreating the Protect folder once before and it did not work.  Today I did it again and, again, it did not work.

Your suggestion seems to have worked, though I don't understand why creating a new user account and a new email account should cause the old email account to stop requesting my email credentials.

Thanks for your help.

Well, the solution has been undone by something.  Yesterday afternoon the problem returned for no reason that I can identify.

I too am searching for a solution to this issue.

I, however know why mine does it, which may assist you as well.

Do you have a certificate attached to your email?  It prompts you to enter your credentials to access your certificate for digitally signing and/or encrypting your emails.

Outlook for PC does not prompt you for credentials, but Outlook for Mac does.  Yes it is for security.  You can easily test it by writing a new message and going to the options tab, click on the Security button.  If 'Digitally Sign Message' is checked, then uncheck it before sending the email.  You should not be prompted for your credentials.

I would like to find a solution where I can still have it signed, and I don't have to enter my credentials for every single email.  It does get old.  But security is inconvenient by design.

Not surprisingly, the problem vanished when I upgraded from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro in July.  Good job, MS, you got me to switch, kicking and screaming all the way.
