deleted (orphaned?) OneNote Notebook still listed in OneNote Online

I have this problem with several OneNote Notebooks, online.

I'm accessing Office 365 on a university server.  I created a OneNote Notebook called notebook1.

I then open OneDrive online, and delete notebook1.  The Notebook file no longer exists.

Now, when I open OneNote Online, it lists notebook1 as being available, even though the file is gone.

If I click on the file to open it, I get a web error.

I would like to remove the orphaned file from the list.

Or, start over again, with an empty OneNote Online install?

Hello Richard,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for posting your query.

Are the notebooks saved on OneDrive (OneDrive.com) or in SharePoint (OneDrive for Business)?

Use a different computer and open OneNote online and check if it displays the deleted notebook.

If different computer does not show the deleted notebook, you may delete browser history, cache and try to open OneNote online and check if it displays the notebook.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

Thank you.

thank you for your generous answer, Raju.  It sounds like you understood the problem I'm experiencing.

But it turns out it's not the browser cache.  I opened OneNote Online from 2 other machines, and the deleted notebooks are still showing up as available (even though they don't exist) and they still produce a web error if I click on them to open.

The notebooks are stored on a university Sharepoint server.  As I said before, if I access them from OneDrive (online, for business) I can rename, move, etc.  But these changes do not update in OneNote Online.  OneNote Online is still seeing notebook files that were deleted in OneDrive Online.

Thanks

Try following- it did the trick for me:

Sign in with the same office 365 account in client OneNote application

Go to file > open > recent notebooks

 > right click on the redundant notebooks in the list > remove from list

I have the same issue.  While your solution works fine in terms of closing the notebook, the deleted notebook still exists and I can open it again.  Worse yet, please who I shared to can still open it.  And I cannot unshared it [re: when I go into Share and right click on the share, instead of giving me the option of Removing the share, it give Copy and Open Contact option.

Fyi, this unwanted notebook was result of a note book rename.  re: I renamed notebook _MyNote to MyNote.  MyNote is working fine but _MyNote remains.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I was having the same problem.

I fixed it by opening OneNote desktop version and going to File > Open.

Deleted notebooks from the list under "Recent Notebook" (Right click the notebook and select "Remove from List" to remove it).

Now when I go to OneNote online and click Notebooks, I only see the notebooks that were left in the Recent Notebook list.
