[SOLVED] OneDrive for Business Critical Error - Unspecified error 8004005 - had to close because of hardware or configuration error

I have been having this problem all day, and I finally fixed it thanks to a couple of posts I saw elsewhere on here and adapted to my specific version and installation of Office 365 (64-bit) on Windows 8.1 (64-bit).

cd /d "%SystemDrive%\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15"

Groove.exe /clean /all

The /clean by itself didn't work. I really needed the /all parameter, which I found in a forum search, but it was not for my version of Office. Now, I am guessing that anyone using the recommended 32-bit version of Office 365 will probably want to do this instead (just a guess, so don't get mad if it doesn't work as I don't have that particular version installed):

cd /d "%SystemDrive%\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15"

Groove.exe /clean /all

Hope this helps someone. It's too late for the chunk of hair I pulled out, but the rest of my head is now safe. Best wishes.

Byron

Hi Byron,

Thanks. This worked for me because I was on Office2013.

For some obscure reason, this error start occurring for me today, but this command line cleared the files.

To everyone else, do note that you should not be confused between the "Program Files" folder and the "Program Files (x86)" folder.

The path in this solution is specific to the "Program Files" folder.

FYI for most beginner users,  the phrase " %SystemDrive% " refers to either your "C:\" or "D:\" or whatever drive you installed your OS on. (Usually a C:\ drive) if you aren't an advanced user.

Thank you for sharing this. But, it didn't make any difference for me. So, I killed the process using process explorer (or task manager, whatever you prefer.). After, I opened the onedrive for business URL, logged in using my credentials and request a sync (after executed groove /clean /all - perhaps it might have made a difference) ... it started to sync w/out any error.

I have been monitoring the cpu, memory, and IOs for groove.exe process and it seems to be working fine. At least, I haven't received the error message anymore.

Thanks!

Apparently this no longer works as of Office 2016. Which version are you on? Have you tried "cd /d %SystemDrive%\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15" or something similar? The paths will be different depending upon which version of Office you have, and if it is 32-bit or 64-bit. For example, if you have the 32-bit version of Office on a 64-bit machine, it will be somewhere under C:\Program Files (x86).
