What happens when I remove an O365 License? When I reassign it?

Hello,

I manage the Office 365 licenses for my company, and I wish to know a little bit more about what exactly happens when a license is removed from a user. Will their Office software stop working? Will it prompt them to sign in with an account that has a valid license? If so, is it immediate, or does it take some time for the software to stop working?

Finally, I often give someone a computer that used to belong to someone else, but still has Office installed from before. If the new user signs into Word or PowerPoint or another O365 product using their credentials, will it replace the old license information? Or will the software be licensed to whoever it was installed for in the first place?

Thank you very much for bringing me clarity on this.

Best,

David

Hi,

I would like to know the edition and version of Office installed on the computer.

Is the computer connected to a domain network?

Removing the license will deactivating Office and goes to the reduce functionality mode and prompts the user to enter the Microsoft Office credentials on which the Office was redeemed on. (If the Office license is shared with the user, then the user will have to enter the shared Microsoft account credentials.)

Hope this information helps you. Please let us know if you need additional information.

Thank you.

The edition would be Office 2016 through Office 365, and the version would be whatever is most up-to-date. Yes the computers are all connected to our domain.

So, if, for example, I install Office on a computer for a person with their E3 license, and they use it for a year, then I remove their E3 license and give the computer to someone else who I've assigned an E3 license to. Will that installation of office go into reduced functionality mode? What about when the new user signs in using the credentials associated with their E3 license?

This is more of a consumer oriented forum. Your questions are very specific to business license control through the admin portal. So you should ask the question in the business version of the forum:

Yes, deactivating the 365 license granted to a specific user should be nearly instant. It may take some time to filter through the system.

When that user logs in, they will not have access to full function Office. The installation on the computer will go into "limited function mode". They can read and print files, but not edit or create new ones.

If someone else with a 365 license assigned to their ID logs in, they should have immediate access to 365.
