B4 Paper Size

How do I properly set up a document as a B4 paper size? On Google, a B4 paper is 250mm x 353mm. Although in MS Word 2016, a B4 paper is 257mm x 364mm.

Which is the right one?

I have attempted to use a custom paper size with 250mm x 353mm, although the settings do not accept 250mm size. It automatically goes down to 215.9mm.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

According to this wiki, MS is closer than google to the standard:

How are you setting the page size? I don't have 2016, but in 2013 it is easy enough to select predefined page size:

  • Page Layout tab
  • Page Setup group
  • Size dropdown
  • select B4

Hi! Thank you for the swift reply. I just looked over the wiki page and it says a standard B4 paper size would be 250mm x 353mm ?

On MS Word 2016, it is a different size.

Which size is the correct one?

I just noticed that 2016 has a scroll bar on the drop down, 2013 doesn't.  Is it possible that the "right" B4 is higher up on the list?

In 2013 the "more paper sizes..." option displays the Page Setup dialog > Paper tab.  In there I have very limited size options.

That is interesting, it seems that in 2016 MS has redefined the B4 Standard. Here is what I see in 2013:

Image

Which is correct? ... Depends on your location.

I googled several sites, they all agreed with wiki, suggesting MS was being "creative".  Then I found this (very old) article:

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd319099%28v=vs.85%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

There B4 is listed same as 2016. BUT, it includes the qualification "JIS".  That is a Japanese standard.  And when I looked farther down the page, there was also B4 ISO, which is European and the same as Wiki.

SO ...

try clicking on the "More Paper Sizes ..." option

to see if there is also an ISO B4 size listed farther down.

Alternate work around ...

Earlier versions of Word were very tightly connected to the selected Printer driver. It seems to becoming less tightly connected, but maybe this is one setting that is still associated with the Printer driver.  Try selecting a different printer to see if that changes the options.

I took a second look at the paper size wiki.  Farther down it does list the JIS standard, showing your B4 size.

That combined with the Windows 2000 article suggests your computer locale, or maybe Word language, is set to something Japanese related.  Is this possible?

I've double checked on everything and yes, this is related to my printer. The printer that I have (Epson L220) uses the JIS B4 paper standard and not ISO. I don't see an option to select this. I'm not sure how to change the settings...

It might be default and I can't do anything about it?

Paper Sizes are dictated by the Printer that is active.

On one of my printers, while it cannot handle paper of any flavour of B4, for B5, it supplies Word with both the JIS B5 and the ISO B5 sizes:

I found this spec page about the printer:

http://www.epson.eu/ix/en/viewcon/corporatesite/products/mainunits/specs/15796

Paper / Media Handling

Number of paper trays 1
Paper Formats

A4, A5, A6, B5, C6 (Envelope), DL (Envelope), No. 10 (Envelope), Letter, 10 x 15 cm, 13 x 18 cm, 16:9, User defined, Legal

So the L220 does not handle B4, in any spec.  This confirms the point Doug made.

So, the fix is probably to select a different printer. One that can handle B4.  If you are not actually printing at this time it could be the Windows "XPS" printer or any "PDF Printer" you have installed.   In Win 8 XPS printer, the B4 JIS shows up long before B4 ISO, so make sure you scroll far enough down.

Ok thank you. =) Unfortunately, this is the only printer I have at home. I am going to go ahead and have this printed elsewhere.

I would like to continue this further by asking:

When I save the word file as a PDF (in B4 ISO size), for some odd reason,  it doesn't look in order.

B4 ISO

Image

In B4 JS format, the PDF looks just fine.

Image

Everything looks OK on MS Word 2016, but when I save it as a PDF, I get a different result.

Because the ISO and JIS paper sizes are slightly different.

The graphical elements "Homemade Wraps" and "GF= ... V=..." callouts are misplaced in ISO probably because the document was laid out in JIS.

The location of the callouts is not tied to a specific place in the text, they are not inserted inline. Instead the graphical elements are located relative to the page margins. So when the margins change, the graphics stay in place, but the text shifts slightly, causing the misalignment.  For example, in the ISO example, first column looke at Buckwheat.  The first line of text ends with "milk", but in the JIS example it ends with "milk batter".  Added up, these minor line changes probably affected where the 3rd column is displayed.

I bet if your turn on the "hide/show" /   feature in the Home tab > Paragraph group, you will see a bunch of blank paragraphs are used to "force" the "Grains"  heading into the "right" place in the JIS version.  But the change in line placement in JIS means that more of those blank paragraphs end up at the bottom of the 2nd column.

For the 3rd column, the way to get around that is to use a manual "column break",

I am guessing that the "Homemade wrap" callout is an inserted shape.  If you right click on it and set the "Wrap Type" to "inline" it will stay in the right place. Unfortunately you won't be able to place it in exactly the same way as it currently sits relative to the text on the line.

To add to what Rohn007 has said, you need to create the document using a printer driver that does have the ISO B4 setting so that you can see what the end result will be when saved as a PDF. The Microsoft XPS Document Writer (which is a virtual printer) does have this option (again, it's much farther down than the JIS B4), so select that as the active printer when you're composing the document. When you save as PDF, the result should be what you expect.

As Rohn007 suggests, however, it is advisable to avoid placing elements with spaces and empty paragraphs; instead, use tab stops, Spacing Before/After, column breaks, etc.
