Excel 2016 process keeps running after closing workbook in Windows 10

I have the following problem - Excel.exe process stays active in task manager even when I close all workbooks. Then, the next time I open new Excel, there's new process added in the task manager and every time it takes more and more time to run Excel, because every time there's another one process added. Does someone have any clues how to solve this?

I had (just solved) the same situation.  I had written some vba code to add a new workbook, change the name, yada, yada, then close it.  In short, the code wasn't closing the new workbook properly.  There are probably many reasons for Excel to remain open in taskmgr.  Just thought I'd mention this
