Outlook won't start after 11/11/2015 security updates

I’m a total self-taught user who feels like my knowledge of my computer and how it works is quite limited.

I'm running Windows 7, 64-bit, Professional Service Pack 1, on a Dell Precision M3800 laptop with Office 2013.

Problem started on morning of 11/11/2015 approx. 4am. Windows wanted a reboot to finish installing updates. Rebooted computer.

From then on Outlook 2013 wouldn’t open. This error message came up:

Problem signature:

Rebooted computer and tried again. Same problem. Searched for error messages online. No help.

Went to start-->view installed updates. Noticed there were several security updates on 11/11/2015. Executed system restore to 11/9/2015. Security updates were not removed.

Outlook still wouldn’t open. Now this error message came up:

Problem signature:

  Problem Event Name:                        APPCRASH

  Application Name:                             OUTLOOK.EXE

  Application Version:                           15.0.4763.1002

I went to start-->view installed updates and, one-by-one, manually deleted all security updates I could delete (about 8 or so although one wouldn’t delete) then rebooted.

Outlook is now working successfully. Lost time: 2 hours. While Outlook is now working for me, did I do anything harmful?

Problem solved.  After doing plenty of investigation found that Update KB3097877 was causing the problem.  All over the web there are reports that this update is causing network connectivity and Outlook 2013 problems.  So I uninstalled it and no more problem.

To uninstall go to Windows Update, choose installed updates, find KB3097877, hilight it and select uninstall.  After restart, problem solved.

Microsoft has rereleased the update and it should no longer crash Outlook and other applications. Check for new updates again in Windows Update and you should be offered the newer version.
