After paying for Outlook 2013 and months of frustration trying to import my 800+ contacts and getting "outlook could not complete the operation because the service provider..." and no luck with the Microsoft provided solutions in this forum, I followed the Oct 2 suggestion above and had this done in about 90 seconds with no errors.
Try this:
close Outlook on your machine,
log into outlook.com,
people,
import from file,
choose Microsoft Outlook (using CSV),
browse for your CSV file,
Import contacts
open Outlook on your machine,
watch it update once connected
and you're done.

I exported contacts from MS Office Outlook to a CSV file.  Now I have Office 365 and trying to import the CSV file and get the "... does not support it" error above.  I have tried many ways to get contacts transferred but no success.  Normal import does not work.  Can anyone help with a work around?  Outlook without contacts has limited use.

Hi Paul,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for posting the question. As I understand you are having tough time importing the contacts from the CSV file into Outlook 2013.

Let me help you in providing information on the error ‘Cannot complete because service provider does not support’ which would give you fair idea for the cause of the error.

This error is the result of trying to import into an Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) account. The EAS service provider (Outlook.com / Hotmail) does not support importing (or moving), only copying into the folder.

If you need calendar or contacts imported, you’ll need to import them into a local PST file then copy the appointments or contacts into the EAS account’s calendar or contacts folders.

To troubleshoot the issue related to Outlook, you may try the steps below:

  • Use a list view, especially in a Calendar, then select all and right-click, drag and copy the items to the EAS account.
  • If the items you copied are not synced up to the server after a few minutes, press F9 or the Send and Receive button.

I hope the above steps helps. If you need further assistance on this particular issue or any other Office related issues let us know and we will be glad to assist you.

Thank you.

I imported the CSV file to my Outlook.com account...then the contacts synced with my Outlook desktop program.
