Outlook 2013 opens Word attachments in Word 2013 despite Word 2010 being preferred version

Hello,

I have multiple versions of Office on my computer but use the latest version of Outlook (2013) that I have.

When I double-click on a Word document in Windows it opens in Word 2010, which is my preferred version. However, if I open a Word document that is an email attachment directly, it opens in Word 2013.

Is there any setting I can change to get attachments to open in Word 2010.

BTW, I do know that it is not a good idea to open and edit Word documents directly from email. I generally open them and if I want to edit, I save the document to a permanent storage location.

Note, this is a recent behavior (within the last couple of days). Before that attachments opened in Word 2010.

Hi Charles,

Thank you for posting your question on Microsoft Community.

Let’s refer to the below steps and set Word 2010 as default program in Control Panel and verify the results.

1. Open Control Panel and search for Default Programs.

2. Select Set Default Programs link.

3. Choose Microsoft Word 2010 from the list of programs.

4. Click "Set this program as default".

Try the suggestions and let us know the result at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.

That had been done. I also tried a command line re-registration, following my own directions from: My docs open in the wrong program! Re-registering Word using the commandline.

Word 2013 is currently not the default app for any file type.

That had been done. I also tried a command line re-registration, following my own directions from: My docs open in the wrong program! Re-registering Word using the commandline.

Here is a screenshot from a message showing the .docx attachments with Word 2013 icons.

Here is a screenshot of such an attachment's icon when downloaded/saved to the Desktop using SaveAs. That document also showed a Word 2013 icon as the attachment.

Note that it is the Word 2010 icon.

When a document is opened from a file saved to the computer it opens in Word 2010. When the same document is opened directly from the email, it opens in Word 2013. This happens whether or not Word 2010 or Word 2013 are already open. AFAIK this only happens when the email is opened in Outlook 2013.

Again, this is a relatively recent development. I have been using Outlook (and Word 2013) for more than two years previously without this anomaly.

Word 2013 is currently not the default app for any file type.

In response to an email from the forum asking if the question has been answered. The answer is "no." Still hoping, though.

You cannot runs more than one Outlook application on the same computer without causing it causing problems. You cannot uninstall/delete Outlook 2013 so unless you happy to deal with any consequent problems by having more than one Outlook you need to uninstall Outlook 2010.

How to run multiple versions of Office on one computer

For a Microsoft Office 2013 version of this article, see 2784668.

Multiple versions of Outlook Outlook 2013 cannot coexist with any earlier version of Outlook. When you install Outlook 2013, the Setup program removes any earlier versions of Outlook that are installed. The Setup program removes these versions of Outlook even if you select the Keep these programs check box in the Removing Previous Versions dialog box.

(the setup program did not remove my 2003 version of Outlook. It did cause me problems though and I did have to remove it which cured the problem that I was having at the time)

I know how to run multiple versions of Office on one machine. I've done it for years. I am still doing it on two other machines. I only have the latest version of Outlook installed. This was not a problem until recently and is only happening on the computer running Windows 10.

I generally use Outlook (latest version 2013), Word 2013, 2010, 2007, 2003, and 97, PowerPoint 2013 and 2010, and Excel 2003, 2010, and 2013. On one of the other computers the latest version is 2010 because it is a Windows Vista OS. I have resisted "upgrading" to Win 10 from Win 7 on the other machine that has Office 2013 installed.

See if this give a clue: Use Word 2013 to open documents created in earlier versions of Word

Open A Word 2013 Document In An Earlier Version Of Word

I know how to open 2013 documents in earlier versions. This is not a problem. These are NOT Word 2013 documents.

I know how to open documents from earlier versions of Word in Word 2013. This is not a problem.

I want to use Word 2010 to open my documents that are email attachments.

The problem is that when opening a document directly from Outlook 2013, all choices for file opening preferences are ignored and the document opens in Word 2013. If I save the attachment to my hard drive and open it from there, it opens, as expected, in Word 2010, not Word 2013.
