Outlook 2013: Inbox not showing count of unread emails & Send / Receive issues

My Outlook 2013 was working fine for about a couple of months until a week ago when it stopped automatically sending / receiving messages on all my accounts (two Hotmail accounts and two work email account using POP/SMTP).  I would have to exit out of Outlook and reopen it for the emails to send / receive.

Then that problem went away for my Hotmail accounts (maybe because of an update on Office 2013 that I installed yesterday).  However my work email account Inbox does not:
(1) update unless I click "Send / Receive" or click when I click Inbox after first clicking on another folder or deleting an email
(2) show count of unread items even when the Inbox contains several new unread emails

Any help on resolving this issue would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi Zakir,

You may remove and re-add the (POP) email account in Outlook and check if it works fine as expected.

To display the total number of items in a folder, do the following:

1.  Right-click a folder, and then click Properties.

2.  On the General tab, click Show total number of items.

Multiple folders cannot be changed at the same time. Repeat these steps for each folder you want to change.

Note This setting is applied also to folders in Favorites. For example, if you set Inbox to show the total number of messages, the setting applies to the Inbox both in Favorites and in the Folder List

I hope it helps. Let us know if you need further help.

Thank you.

I have this unread indicator issue as well. I'm using Outlook 2013 to connect to an Exchange 2010 server.

I have the settings for the inbox set correctly.

But the folder does not show the number of unread items. It was working until a couple of days ago.

I am operating in cache mode and if I turn cache mode off then the unread indicator works, but with cache mode off, the "Unread/Read" toggle button doesn't work (unless I refresh the view).

This is another known issue with the category view addressed here. We use category view because this is a shared mailbox.

So it seems like there's a known view issue with Outlook 2013 in an Exchange 2010 environment that I'm hoping Microsoft will have a patch for soon. This isn't a debilitating issue, but more of an annoyance that would be really nice to see fixed.

Try running a repair on your account.  After you restart Outlook it may go into offline mode.  Just deselect work offline in the ribbon and it should resolve the issue.
