Outlook couldn't start last time. Safe mode could help you troubleshoot the problem, but some features might not be available in this mode. Do you want to start in safe mode?

Hi Steve,
Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for posting the question. As I understand Outlook crashes while opening normally but opens fine in safe mode.

This issue might have occurred due to non-Microsoft program conflicting with Office application, due to add-ins, issues with navigation pane etc.

I would like to ask few questions on the issue:

1.       How did you disable add-ins from Outlook?

2.       Do you have any plugin or add-in (ABBYY PDF Transformer) installed for Outlook?

Start the computer in clean boot open Outlook and check if Outlook works fine.

Note: Clean boot is performed to disable all startup programs and 3rd party services on the machine and check if they are conflicting with the Office program.

Refer to the article mentioned to start the computer in clean boot mode.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After completing the troubleshooting steps ensure to restart the computer in normal mode which is explained in the same article.

If Outlook works fine in clean boot, refer the complete article to perform advanced clean boot and find out which program is causing conflict.

Once the problem product is found, contact the appropriate technical support team to update the program.

You may also refer to the links mentioned which discusses about the similar issue:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2632425

Note: The above link is applicable to Outlook 2013 too.

I hope the above suggestion helps. If you need any further assistance reply and we will be glad to assist you.

Thank you.

Hi Steve,

Thank you for the reply.

Since the above steps did not fix the issue, disable the windows search and check. Follow the steps mentioned to disable windows search:

·         Close Outlook.

·         Click on Start< All Programs< Accessories< Run.

·         In the Run window type 'services.msc’ (without quotes) and click Ok.

·         In the services windows search for Windows Search, right click on Windows Search Engine and click on Stop.

·         Open Outlook and check if it works fine.

Thank you.

Hi Steve,

As disabling Windows search engine did not fix the issue follow the steps mentioned to delete the add-ins from the registry and check:

Step 1: Re-enable the Windows Search Engine:

·         Close Outlook.

·         Click on Start< All Programs< Accessories< Run.

·         In the Run window type 'services.msc’ (without quotes) and click Ok.

·         In the services windows search for Windows Search, right click on Windows Search Engine and click on Start.

Step 2: Delete the add-ins from registry:

Important: Ensure to back up the registry before changing the registry keys:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Back-up-the-registry

·         Close Outlook.

·         Click on Start< All Programs< Accessories< Run.

·         In the run window, type Regedit and click Ok.

·         In the registry editor window browse to the location mentioned and delete the Addins key from the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Outlook\Addins

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Outlook\Addins

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ Outlook\Addins

·         Once you have deleted the above the add-in keys, open Outlook and check if it works fine.

Thank you.

Hi Anula,

No Joy i'm afraid.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Outlook\Addins did not exist,

there was HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Outlook\AddLnLoadTimes which i did not remove.

Also HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ Outlook\Addins did not exist.

When starting in safe mode it will only start on the profile i had set up and it will not start in safe mode on the standard profile.

Thanks

The clean boot showed that my problem was a utility named (AMD external Events Utility).

Once removed all Office programs opened.
