Hi Wayne,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community and thanks for posting the question. As I understand, you’re facing issues in launching the Office applications after Office 2013 was installed.

I have a couple of questions for you;

1.       Did the Office 2013 installation complete without any errors?

2.       Do you have any other version of Office installed on the computer?

This issue may occur if the Office 2013 installation is corrupted. It may also happen if any third party application is interfering with the Office applications.

You may repair Office 2013 from the Control Panel and see if that helps. Refer the link for more information.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project-help/repair-or-remove-office-HA010357402.aspx

Note: The steps would be similar for Windows 8.

If that doesn’t help, you may perform a Clean Boot to disable any third party applications that may be interfering, and check if you’re able to launch the Office applications. Refer the link below on how to perform a clean boot.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: Ensure to boot the computer back in normal mode after troubleshooting.

If the issue gets resolved in Clean Boot mode, then enable the non-Microsoft programs one by one to isolate the program that’s causing the issue.

Hope that helps. Let us know if you have any further concerns. Thank you.

Run this fixit to remove the traces of the old 2013 installation.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501

Also uninstall any other version of Office, if you have it.

Then reinstall office 2013.

this was tried and FIX IT ran.. and it still NEVER FINISHES.  Goes to 100% and just stays running in task manager and never finishes or says anything.  Reboot or cleanup does the same thing.. nothing to get this to finish.

Uninstall and reinstall? MS is kidding right? Downloading (because you cannot download the 2013 version as standalone any more) 800MB each time? If you had to do this on 20 clients on low bandwidth (yes MS the real world still works like this)......

SO AGREE WITH ALEXANDER, the typical MS solution, REINSTALL, every few days when problems occur, how great is that. Unfortunately am bound to Office for my work, and even worse, paying for something that causing me more troubles than not.

Got the same problem, with 365 Office, haven't had any other office before, did few times repairs, updates, and problem still occurring.

I have the same issue with the same product.  I have seen multiple posts on multiple sites with this problem where people take hours trying to fix it without resolution.  This is unacceptable for a leading company, and in many cases it appears related to trial versions of office that remain despite following recommended removal procedures.

Why has this not been addressed satisfactorily?

Please fix this issue.

Thanks for your help.

This problems can be caused by pending Windows updates. If this is the case, rebooting the computer to allow the application of the updates to complete will resolve the problem.

This has occured to me twice and in both cases was resolved by allowing the windows updates to complete.

No, this does not help.  Why do you make things so complicated?  I don't have time to delete and re-enable all my non-Microsoft programs.
