Can't establish DDE connection to Excel Starter 2010 from Word starter 2010

CAN'T ESTABLISH DDE CONNECTION TO EXCELSTARTER 2010 FROM WORD STARTER 2010

I'm trying to do a mail merge in Word Starter 2010. When I select the Execl spreadsheet as the Data Source and select 'MS EXCEL WORKSHEETS via DDE' I get an error message that Word could not re-establish a DDE connection to Excel.

I've tried copying the sheet in the Excel workbook to a new file. I've tried making a new file for the Word file that I'm using for my template and nothing works.

I've tried using an Excel file in .xls and .xslx formats. Neither format works. I need to use the DDE connection to retain the format for phone numbers and dates.

Answer
DDE has always been flaky, which is why Microsoft dropped it as the default after Office 2000. Number formatting should not create a problem - use field switches to set the format of your numbers. See http://www.gmayor.com/formatting_word_fields.htm
