How to recover a previous version of an excel spreadsheet after saving it

How can I recover a previous version of an excel spreadsheet where changes were saved after an accidental deletion of important info?I was working on an excel spreadsheet yesterday and had to leave my computer to run an errand and when I returned to my computer, I just saved all the documents and spreadsheets I had been working on earlier in the day so that I could shut down my computer. Today, I opened excel and when I opened the spreadsheet that I had been working on yesterday, I noticed that only the second page was saved and somehow the first page was deleted without me knowing it and it has some important information that I was needing to review but now I can not. So, Im hoping someone will be able to help and tell me if I can  recover a previous version of this spreadsheet before this deletion occurred? If so, how do I do this?

Hi Tinkerbe1122,

If your file is on a network share, try this:

- open Explorer and locate the file in question
- Right-click the file, select Properties.
- Click the Previous Versions tab.

Note that this will only work if this option is provided by the network.

Another option is to download and install an undelete program which can recover
deleted files. Before running that program, rename the most recent copy,
because the deleted file will have the same name as your current copy.

If that doesn't work, I'm afraid you will have to dig out a backup copy of your
file (if you have one!).

In Windows 7, you don't have to be on a network drive for the Previous versions feature to work.

Also try looking in the %TEMP% folder:

1. Go to the start menu and type in "run"
2. Open up "run"
3. Type in %temp%
4. search through the files here for it, it will likely be named ~Autosave000000XXX

It will be near the bottom of the ~Autosave files, if it was the last thing you were working on. You can also view the date and time by them, to help you find the correct one.

Although the article suggests a specific product, it also describes the best way to do deleted file recovery. The key point is that you should take some precautionary steps BEFORE the problem occurs. Or, have a second computer that you can use to do the preparation retroactively.

Office Regenerator 2011

http://www.abstradrome.com/

I recently tried this tool (Office Regenerator). It claims to recover files from deleted file fragments. It seems to work. On my 100GB data partition it ran for about 1 hour and found 691 files, 450 MB, going back almost 7 months! I don’t remember if that was the last time I used a wipe freespace tool on my drive They definitely were not in my recycle bin.  Don’t do first auto run . The interface provides lots of Filter criteria such as: date created range, last saved range, last printed range, title, num pages, editing time, revision number, file type, author.

All of the recovered files I looked at were properly structured.

Site has a 30 day moneyback guarantee. I haven’t tried it, but that sounds encouraging.

I gave it a try and it looks like a really handy tool!

<snip>System Restore Explorer is a tool which allows you to browse system restore points on your computer and select individual ones for deletion should you wish to free up some disk space. It also allows you to mount the contents of a restore point into a folder so that you can browse and copy individual files, without the need to perform a full system restore.

When you select a restore point and “mount” it the tool will create a shortcut to that particular restore point in the root folder of the drive, which will allow you to browse the contents and copy files. </snip>
