Something only very recent - presumably down to some dodgy  'update' from Microsoft

Whenever I set the print area on a sheet, the machine slows to a crawl, and the spreadsheet appears to be be refreshing every few seconds.

Looking in Task manager I see the CPU usage has rocketed permanently to between 80% and 100%.

Even closing the offending workbook has no effect on CPU usage.

Please can anyone tell me how to fix this.

What application or process is eating that CPU time? Look through the list of processes on the [Processes] tab - be sure you choose Processes from all users.

I suppose you could start with a REPAIR installation of Office 2010:  Find it in the Control Panel, Programs and Features, highlight it and choose "CHANGE".  That will start the installation dialog for office, and I believe the 2nd option in the list is a Repair of Office.
