"PowerPoint can't open the type of file represented by [FILENAME]" or "No text converter is installed for this file type"

Hi,

I see the below messages when I try to open certain .ppt and .pptx files, got from a client through "4Shared.com" file sharing website without zipping the files.

Error Message for .ppt: "PowerPoint can't open the type of file represented by [FILENAME]" or "No text converter is installed for this file type".

Error Message for .pptx:"The document [Filename] caused a serious error the last time it was opened. Would you like to continue opening it?"

If I click YES button.... I get the below error message

"PowerPoint found unreadable contents in [filename]. Do you want to recover the contents of this presentation? If you trust the source of this presentation, click yes."

Then a progress spinning wheel spins for the entire day.

OS: Windows 7 Professional

MS Office Version : MS Office 2007

This generally means that your presentation file is corrupt.

Try downloading them again.

You can unzip the PPTX files and try removing, for example, images and videos that are in the media folder, but I suspect it won't be much help unless you know what's in the file and what might be corrupt -- so, basically, you know what to look for.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint-help/recover-a-corrupt-powerpoint-file-HA001116878.aspx?queryid=c5e7aebdb5594ef3bfbc0016dfaafebf&respos=2&CTT=1 might have some ideas you can try (in PPT 2007, Insert Slides is Home tab , New Slide, Reuse Slides).

Which version of PowerPoint were the files created?

You may want to check the suggestion provided in the KB article below which speaks of the same error message.
