Why dont mailto links with more than 1026 characters open in Outlook 2007?

I see that when our application has more than 1026 characters in the mailto link, it will not open automatically in Outlook 2007. It works fine with other mail clients, but not outlook. Is there any way to increase this limit?

Hi Tammy.M,
No, i just stated that as an example. It doesn't matter what the individual size of the Subject or Body is - if the total size exceeds 1026, it just refuses to open.
I checked the example you gave me and the link didnt open because the total length was 1029.
Thanks,
Vaasanthi

A subject that is that large is probably larger than most email messages people receive (newsletters and the like excepted and even those would never try and cram an entire message as the message subject). Also goes completely against being able to view email summaries - personally would likely delete any message with a subject line that large as being garbage (assuming I even had an email client or monitoring process that would display it)

In any case, all that aside, the maximum that Outlook '2007 will allow to be entered in the Subject field when creating any new email message is 255 characters. The number you indicated is more than likely to be either 1023 or 1024 characters being the next logical breakpoint length value (1025 doesn't make any sense)

The problem is this.

When using the mailto function on a website, most browser/email client combos accept a long body content embedded in the link. No problem. However I just encountered an issue where the website worked perfectly well for me on a Mac with Chrome/Apple Mail client combo; but exactly the same page failed on Windows laptop running a Chrome/Outlook combo.

After hours of pulling my hair out, I found that Outlook simply refuses to open a mailto link with a long body text.

There seems to be no other limits with other email clients, so why the issues with Outlook? Perhaps an error message - rather than "silently failing to respond" might be a useful thing for Microsoft developers to implement, and make life a little easier for their fellow developers.

However, the issue stands. A pity the business world uses Microsoft, but that's the rub. And we're stuck with it. I now have to go back to my client and tell them they can't have those nice long email body texts they wanted.

Michael

Please see this other forum post that lists the link limits for the different Outlooks through 2013:
