Okay, let's take a slightly more aggressive approach.
Open Explorer and locate an .XLS file. Right click it and go down to Open With, then select
Choose default program from the menu flyout.
If Excel 2007 is specifically listed in the Recommended Programs section, first make sure that
Always use the selected program to open this kind of file is checked and double-click
Excel 2007. You should be able to tell Excel 2007 from any others by the icon.
If you are unsure which Excel is which, click the Browse button and navigate to,
%PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft Office\Office12
... then locate Excel.exe and double-click it. When you are back at the previous
Open With dialog, the Excel 2007 should be selected. Again, ensure that
Always use the selected program to open this kind of file is checked and click OK in the lower right.
BTW, that's the correct icon for Excel 2007 in the above graphic.
You will likely want to repeat the procedure for .XLM files.
