Opening docx files in office 2003

I am running office 2003 and have installed the compatibility Pack.  I can open pptx files, but word locks up when I try to open a docx file.  Any suggestions for a fix?  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the compatibility pack with no luck.

I went to the article and indicated that it did not solve the problem.  Word stops responding when I try to open a docx document.  I have tried using office repair with no success and have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the compatibility pack, also with no success.  It appears to install properly and I have installed all updates.  I do have the error signature and tech Info from from the error report that comes up when I close a non-responsive program if that would help.

Verify if you multiple versions of Office suite installed, if so uninstall.

Try to restart your computer in Windows clean boot mode.  Click on the link below to know how to start computer in clean boot:

Note: Ensure to restart the computer to normal mode once troubleshooting is completed.

I first checked to make sure I only have one version of office installed.  I did this by opening the "add/remove program" program in the control panel and also running the windows install cleanup.  Both showed only the one version of office.  Per the attached instructions, I then restarted in the clean boot mode and then tried to open a docx file.  Word became unresponsive.  I closed it and then proceeded to follow "step 4" in the file.  When I tried to open a docx file, it worked.  Per you instructions, I then reran msconfig and set it up to the normal startup.  I then tried to open a docx file and word again locked up.  According to the task manager, CPU usage was at 100%.  The problem seems to be limited to word as I am able to open compatibility mode programs for Excel and PowerPoint.  Where do I go from here?
