Outlook Send error 0x800CCC78 and 0x800CCC7D

Hi, I hope you can help. On my laptop the Outlook 2002, XP op system, was set up so that my gmail is run through Thunderbird. Recently it has stopped sending messages out and I receive the following two Sending' reported errors: (0x800CCC78) : 'Unable to send the message. Please verify the e-mail address in your account properties. The server responded: 530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first.'

(0x800CCC7D) : 'Outgoing SMTP does not support SSL...'  - currently my SMTP port is set to 587, IMAP port 993 both have 'This server requires an SSL connection' checked yes.

I am novice at trouble shooting system configurations, it's a wonder I got this far. If someone could please help it would be appreciated.
