Too many different cell formats

Once I get this message there is no "back" button and I can no longer change any cell format in any sheet in the workbook, sohttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/213904 does not help.

The problem started when I clicked the "select all" area and set the fill color of all cells on a sheet to "no fill".

I got the "Too many different cell formats" message clicked "OK" and rows 1 to 39 lost their "fill" the rest were left alone.

Now even a single cell format results in the "Too many different cell formats" message so I can't simplyfy/remove formats as suggested in the above KB link.
