Zune device playing m4a files

I have been trying to listen to a podcast that is in the m4a audio format. My Zune HD 32gb device says "Zune can not play this video file."

Looking at the software on my computer, it says that Zune should be able to play m4a files, and I can play the podcast just fine in the software. I just cant play it on the device.

Answer

The problem is that M4A (and by extension M4B and MP4) is a container and does not necessarily tell you what kind of data is contained inside. Zune devices seem to support some of the data that can be contained within these files, but not all of it. Specifically, the Zune devices do not support "enhanced" podcasts with embedded media and bookmarks.

This has been a known issue for some time. The Zune Software will play the files just fine, as you said, but the devices (Including Windows Phone 7 devices) will not.
