Windows Media Player 12

I received the following error message when I tried to burn some music recently.  I have burned using the same Media Player in the past, approximately 6 months ago, but now I can't for some reason.

*Windows Media Player cannot find the file. The link from the item in the library to its associated digital media file might be broken. To fix the problem, try repairing the link or removing the item from the library.

I have tried all of the suggested remedies that have been posted to date but nothing has fixed the problem.  And, there was a few posts/suggestions that have me confused.  I clicked on this link posted July 30, 2016: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14209/get-windows-media-player.   What I got was:  *Windows Media Player is not compatible with your system.

You are running Windows 10 64-bit. Although Windows Media Player will not run on your system, you can download Windows Media Player for other operating systems.

This is confusing since I had used the same Media Player before to play & burn music on this exact system.

Within that same post (same day, same Microsoft Support person) was another link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17615/windows-media-player-12 & when I clicked on that link I got:  *Windows Media Player 12~ Designed by media lovers, for media lovers. Windows Media Player 12—available as part of Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10*.

One link that says Media Player is not compatible with my system & the next one says Media Player 12 was designed for Windows 10, which I have. What the heck??

All I know is that it once worked (Windows Media Player version 12) on my Windows 10 operating system & now it won't.  Can anyone help me correct this error please?

Sincerely & Respectfully,

C.J.F.

Hi - yes, that first link is a bit confusing . Basically what it's saying is that WMP 12 is included in Windows 10 as part of the operating system so there is no compatible download.

There are a number of reasons why files won't burn to disc. The particular error message you are receiving suggests either a library or digital rights problem. Can you locate a file that you were unable to burn in your music folder and right-click it - then select properties... on the 'General' tab check the file type and then on the 'Details' tab, does it say 'yes' or 'no' next to 'protected'? Please update and we'll take it from there. Thanks, R.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

In the past whenever I dropped a song in the Burn List & it presented a problem an "x" would show & I would then remove it from the computer altogether but, I went back to the music that I was trying to burn & checked each one individually as you suggested.  No problem with any protected files.

I want to add something that I found curious...when I wasn't able to burn with the Windows Media Player I thought I would just use the Nero Express program that I had & it was gone.  I couldn't find a trace of it.  I don't allow other people on my computer so I doubt it disappeared due to someone else & I'm pretty certain that I didn't uninstall it but it's no longer among my software.  I don't know if this is relevant or not but, thought I should inform you just in case something could have happened due to that.

I have security with Comodo Internet Security Pro if that information helps.

And, thank you very much for your attention & help.  I greatly appreciate it!

Thanks for updating... is this a pc that has been upgraded to W 10? That might explain the vanishing Nero program. I doubt it would be due to anything malicious but it would not hurt to run the MS security scanner and maybe as an extra check use AWD cleaner (free version)

https://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx (Run a full scan -it may take a while)

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/

If that's all clear we can concentrate on WMP itself. - Thanks, Ric.

Yes, this Lenovo PC was upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.

The scans just finished successfully with no unwanted software or infections.  WooHoo!

Again, thanks.

Moving on......

P.S.  Wanted to mention that the ADW cleaner link was outdated.

That's odd (re ADW) - it's working for me (last updated 7 Jan 17)... there's some sort of ongoing legal action so maybe it's due to your location (I'm in the UK).

I'll get back tomorrow when I'm properly awake! - R.

Thank you! (Another year older yesterday so a bit of 'celebrating' hmm!)

The original error message you mentioned suggests a library problem so let's check that first. Go back (in WMP) to one of the files that would not burn... was this directly added to a 'burn' list, or were you trying to burn a playlist that already existed?

If it was the first, highlight one of the files - right-click it and select 'Open file location' - if you get the same error message (or no response) it is definitely a library problem. If it takes you to the original file we need to dig deeper.

If you were burning a playlist - open the playlist in WMP by selecting 'Playlists' in the LH pane and then opening the relevant list. Are tracks in the list that put up the message looking misaligned to the others? This would mean the playlist links are broken.

Cheers, R.

Good morning to you, RicW.   Glad that you could make it.  :)

The files are in contained in 3 Playlists.  I would pull individual files from the library of each of the Playlists & drop each one down into the Burn List.

After reading your reply, I opened each Playlist & the files are orderly & not misaligned.  I then began with the first file - right click - Open file location & with the first 4 files it did open the file location.  However, on the next 3 files when I right click = Open file location, nothing happened.  Out of curiosity I then went & checked the file Properties &  opened up the Media Usage Right tab & it would read "This file is not protected".

So, now I'm a little confused.  If there is no missing or broken link there under the Media Usage Rights BUT no response when I click on - Open file location, does that mean that that file is no good for burning?  Because even though it has no response when I click on - Open file location & the  Media Usage Rights shows that the file is not protected, I'm still able to play that song/file.

While I wait to hear back from you I'm going to go to the first Playlist & check each individual file for any broken links & pull any that I may find.

Hope you're having a lovely morning.

Again, thank you for hanging in there!

CJF

Playlists do throw up an extra layer for potential link problems... the protection issue is not relevant, and only usually applies to WMA files anyway. It may be the playlist needs rebuilding. What about if you go to one of those tracks in WMP outside of the playlist under artist/album .. does it find the file location when you r-click and select OFL there?

It may have been completely 'lost' by WMP - in which case the next move will be to restore the library.

To do that follow the path highlighted here... if you can't see 'Tools' top left just click in the arrowed space...

Good afternoon RicW.

Well, I read your note & went to the first album - clicked on Tools - then clicked - Restore Media Library.  After clicking on "Yes", the WMP closed down.  I reopened the WMP &, at first, I get a message saying that the library contained no files.  My heart sank.  I thought, "Uh-oh, what did I just do?"  I thought the entire library must have been missing a link/links & corrupt. (Funny how fast a mind can jump to conclusions & assumptions.)  Then the media player showed that there were files still there.

I went back to your note & saw that I did skip a step.  Oops!  I missed a right click - Open file location - after opening up an album.

But, all is well.  I then started a Burn List & dropped several songs from various albums into it & clicked on - Start Burn. It started calculating the space remaining immediately.  No problem!!  I can once again burn music.  Woo Hoo!!

I see that there are several tracks missing that I been able to burn at one time so it's going to take some time to determine what those are.  I could download entire albums again but then I'd have repeated tracks taking up space.

Let me ask you where I went wrong when I burned lists before. My procedure was to take files from downloaded albums & drop tracks into the Burn List.  Then I would name the Burn List...say, Burn #1.  Then I would start another Burn List & it would be Burn List #2.  Did I mess up there by creating new playlists from the burn lists?

You get props from me, Dear because it looks like my error problem with broken links is solved.  And, you guided me through the repair process with ease making it simple for me.  Bless you!!

I had tried the other suggested repairs but that got me nowhere.  I was close to throwing in the towel & giving someone a piece of my mind due to my frustration but, fortunately, I didn't make an a_ _ of myself & tried one more time by posting the issue I was having.  I'm very grateful & highly appreciative of your assistance helping me to resolve this problem & my ability to once again BURN!!!  Thank you!  Thank you!!  Thank you!!  You are a genius! When the time comes, which I'm certain it will, I pray that you are available & I can find you.

I look forward to your response regarding where I went wrong.  Until then...

Respectfully,

CJF
