Breakout room issues

Hi, I'm using Teams breakout rooms for teaching and have had one or two issues today:

1. The option to automatically assign students to rooms was not there. I had to do it manually.

2. One student could not be assigned to a room. Her name was shaded.

3. Some students dropped out of their rooms and couldn't get back.

4. The Announcement function was missing.

5. When I brought them back to the main room, at least 3 didn't make it.

These were not problems last week when I taught. The only problem then was that not all students got automatically assigned to rooms. I ended up with about 5 remaining in the main room.

The breakout room feature is intended to be officially released around November 2020 as you can see in the roadmap calendar in the following link. This feature is still not widely released and may still need some improvements.

I guess the version you are currently using is not the final version. I personally suggest you wait until November for the final version to be officially released. In the meantime, I suggest you reinstall the MS Teams Desktop app by downloading the app from the following link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/m...

Thank you for your response. I'll try downloading the app again and then probably just be patient until it launches in November!

Hi Daniel,

I'm a teacher currently using TEAMS for distance learning.

The new breakout rooms is really a game changer! Fabulous feature!

One thing though, there is a student who is always left out for some reason. She has the app version but still she cannot join any of the rooms (not assigned to any of them)

What are the specific technical requirements or what might be the cause?

TIA

Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

I am that student with this issue. Did you find any way to fix it in the end?

Thanks

Hi Thomas,

Yes as a matter if fact I have.

In order to join the breakout rooms all users need to use the latest app version of Teams. The ones who couldn’t join were using the web version.

Hope this helps

We have the latest version downloaded and New Teams Meeting experience turned on. When I open the breakout rooms, some of the attendees are unable to see the Return button to return to the main meeting.

Is this a resolution issue?
Thank you!

I have another problem. I have one main roon and one breakout room.

I assigned some people to be in the breakout room to dicusss something and left the remaining in the main room.

I wanted to reassign back only one member in the breakout room to be back again to the main room with us. How to do that? Unable to..

As of this writing, you are unable to reassign an attendee from one breakout room to another, or even the main room for that matter, without closing the breakout room.

I have also noticed that if a person disconnects from a session while in a breakout room, that person does not automatically get placed back into that breakout room upon returning to the meeting. The person is placed into the main meeting room and has to manually join the breakout room.

If you really need to keep them separated, you would need to create two breakout rooms and assign people accordingly.

Daniel, is there a limit to how many people you can assign? I had a user who was leading a meeting of 70 and they did not have the option to manually assign.
