Teams Desktop app is running slow and freezing at times

While using Teams desktop app it starts to run slow, especially when several messages are incoming from different chats.

Hardware is not an issue since it is running on a 16GB DDR4 RAM and an Intel Core i7 8th Gen, Network average speed is at 25 MBPS Download, and 8.75 MBPS Upload.

This issue has been happening for several days now, drivers up to date as well as software's version.

Has someone had the same issues lately that could help me fix the issue?

Regards.

Hi Daniel.Escudero,

Thanks for your post and let us know above information.

From your description, please sign out Teams desktop client and exit Teams completely. Go to %appdata%\Microsoft\teams\Cache and delete all the files. Then go to %appdata%\Microsoft\teams\Application Cache\Cache, delete all the files. Re-open Teams to see if this will make any improvement.

Note: please don't forget to copy all the files to a different location before you delete them.

Also, to narrow down this issue, you may try to perform a clean boot in Windows and check if there is the seem results.

In addition, as you mentioned this issue happens when several messages are incoming from different chats, to help you further, we would like to confirm the following information with you for analysis:

1. Please sign into Teams web APP to see if there is the same issue when receiving several messages.

2. Can you receive the chat messages?

3. Is there any error messages if you click to check the chat message? If so, please send us a screenshoot of the error message.

Best regards,

Jennifer

Lol really constructive! I agree the app is slow and should not be as slow as it is. Maybe the problem is the underlaying tech used to build the app. A complete rewrite of the app in something lighter would be appreciated, especially these days when we all rely on Teams and other online comm platforms.

Yes, teams takes 3-4 minutes to load on by brand new Dell XPS I7. Latest updates, etc..

Zoom takes about 10 seconds.

You be the judge.

Agree its very heavy.

Uses 1.5Gs ram just by being there, not being on a call or anything, some conversations and contacts cannot use this much right off start.

Each time we change conversation to someone, its heavy, to display the conversation (that apparently is already using a lot of memory, but it still needs to load).

I can not stand Edge or Teams. Now that it has been forced upon us, I have no choice but to use it. I am not posting my operating system bla bla bla... it doesn't matter, Teams and Edge take forever to load and freeze all day on and off. Slowing me down all day, every day and I am sick of it. Microsoft needs to stop implying possible virus, possible this, that and the other.... and FIX IT. It is not all of our operating systems ... its Microsoft.

Sorry but I just had a horrible work day due to this issue and upon google searching (which comes up in less than a quarter of a second, by the way) all I see from Microsoft is the same response, not owning they need to address it on their end.

ENOUGH, I just can't wait to start my 14 hour work day tomorrow!!! facing the same problem.

In my case Teams app usually takes 0,8 - 1,2GB of memory.

I've deleted much more than you suggest. Everything regarding to this article https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msteams/forum/all/teams-become-very-slow-when-someone-chat/351eaf76-52d3-4794-809c-d4f50dfc6cc2

It didn't help at all.

It might be easy to reproduce. In Teams tab create ~10 groups(channels). In each channel add many conversations - use New conversation button ~30 times for each channel. Add many posts to each conversation. Add some pdf, png, jpg files in the posts.

Add new tabs at the top of the channel (in few channels).

This is how we use Teams in my company.

It's freezes a lot. Every time I want to switch the conversation in Activity tab it takes ages (~30secs) even there are no other active messages etc.

When new messages coming whole app freezes when I switch left menu to see the message.

This problem is still on going and only getting worse on all platforms!

I use teams on a pc and a mac and an iphone. It’s extremely slow extremely heavy it’s like rendering in blender. I stoped using it on Mac because it’s impossible now to use it. From the time i launch it immediately the fan go full throttle and yet it’s still won’t work. The only problem is my work still use it otherwise there are apps way better than this!
