The inability to assign directly to sections within section groups in Teams is a known limitation of the current platform. While you've been able to distribute assignments to sections without issues in the past, this functionality hasn't yet been extended to sections within section groups.
However, there are a few possible ways to fix this:
You can try to use the OneNote Class Notebook add-in for Teams to distribute pages or sections to your students’ notebooks. The add-in allows you to distribute pages or sections to any section or section group in your students’ notebooks, including the ones that are not visible in Teams.
You can also try to use the OneNote Online app to distribute pages or sections to your students’ notebooks. The app allows you to distribute pages or sections to any section or section group in your students’ notebooks, including the ones that are not visible in Teams.
