Teams screen sharing doesn't work on Linux

The Microsoft Teams app screen sharing doesn't work on Linux (Ubuntu 21.04, Gnome 3.38.5, Wayland, Intel HD graphics). The button to open the Share Tray just creates an empty black bar with no sharing options. This applies to the .deb and the flathub flatpak.

Hi db579,

Thanks for your post on the community forum. I'm Nik, an independent advisor here to assist you with this.

Please try clearing ms teams app cache and see if that helps, go to these folders and delete files from each folders:
~/.config/Microsoft/Microsoft Teams/Application Cache/Cache
~/.config/Microsoft/Microsoft Teams/blob_storage
~/.config/Microsoft/Microsoft Teams/Cache
~/.config/Microsoft/Microsoft Teams/databases
~/.config/Microsoft/Microsoft Teams/GPUCache
~/.config/Microsoft/Microsoft Teams/IndexedDB
~/.config/Microsoft/Microsoft Teams/Local Storage
~/.config/Microsoft/Microsoft Teams/tmp

Besides, do you see a similar issue on the Teams web app? To check, please access 'Teams Web App' https://teams.microsoft.com , use "Use the web app instead" option to open teams in a browser(Firefox) and check the outcome. It will help to isolate the issue with the desktop app.

Regards
Nik

Clearing the caches does not change anything , the same behavior occurs. The web app in Chromium does not have this problem, the share tray correctly opens and displays window options there.

Hi db579,

I could find an existing community thread that explains some possible solution, please check here:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questi...

It suggests that Wayland does not support screen sharing, you can find the "Sharing" settings didn't have the screen tab. please switch to the Xorg desktop and try again.

Nik

That thread appears to relate to Ubuntu 20.04. Since 21.04 Wayland is the default. Screen sharing works fine in all other applications including Google Meet, Zoom etc, and also in the Teams web app on Chromium so I think this is an issue with Teams specifically.

Not sure if it is a compatibility issue with Ubuntu 21.04. I see that MS Teams supports only the following Linux distribution at this point:
Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, 20.04 LTS, Fedora 30 Workstation, RHEL 8 Workstation, CentOS 8

Fedora has also switched to Wayland by default now so it might be worth prioritizing Wayland support.

Hi db579,

Thanks for your feedback.
To report this suggestion to the Microsoft Teams product group, I'd suggest submitting the suggestion directly in the Microsoft UserVoice forum here: https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/

Rest assured that Microsoft monitors and reviews each customer's feedback and ideas, some features would be added to the product and services based on customer feedback in the future. While Microsoft can’t guarantee any specific features or timelines but promise to read and consider all suggestions as feasible.

Thanks for understanding!

Regards
Nik

The reason is that Teams is based on a very old Electron version (maybe the 9) which doesnt support wayland screen sharing, the ONLY fix possible now is to switch back to XOrg, but im sure Microsoft noticing the default setting on Wayland from Canonical/Ubuntu will change his mind and update the Electron base version.
